Mezhdurechensk combines the history of coal mining with river landscapes, a city park and mountains. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment here, you can shape your trip around your preferred pace: city history and public spaces, quiet walks or winter sports. The sights and activities offer different experiences, without requiring a single set sightseeing itinerary.

City Park, Museum and Mining History

A monumental six-metre-high figure of Gulliver stands in the city park. Along the Alley of Fairy Tales, visitors encounter characters from Russian folk tales and modern animation. A striking standalone figure and a series of different story worlds stand side by side.

The local history museum’s exhibition is devoted to the history of a city that has literally grown on coal. The Hall of Glory has three halls: one on the Great Patriotic War, and others on the local wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya. The “Miners of Mezhdurechensk” memorial honours the miners’ hard work and those who never returned from the mines.

Another bronze sculpture stands in Concord Square: “Following in His Father’s Footsteps” depicts a tired miner and his young son wearing an oversized helmet. The sculpture represents the solidarity between generations and the high regard for the mining profession in the city. Together, the museum, memorial and sculpture offer different perspectives on the local mining history.

Riverside Promenade, Forest Trails and Mountains

The city promenade runs along the Tom and Usa rivers. As a public recreation area, it offers paved paths, benches and lighting, and is a place for walks, sports and family recreation. The promenade also protects the city from spring flooding. It offers a different kind of outdoor experience from the museum halls.

Mount Syrkashinskaya is suited to quiet walks and hikes. The ascent to the summit leads through mixed forest, with the Siberian taiga reaching close to its edge. Trail conditions can vary, so it’s worth taking them into account before setting out. Paragliding flights can also take off from Mount Syrkashi; it’s best to check in advance whether an operator is currently available. There are also ski runs on Mount Syrkashi, which is within the city.

Nearby Mount Yugus, on the opposite bank of the Tom, offers views of Mezhdurechensk. The Yugus ski complex lies on the southeastern outskirts of the city, five kilometres away, on the left bank of the Tom; a cable car connects it across the river. Winter sports facilities include four runs of varying difficulty, lifts, artificial lighting and equipment rental. The ski school and lessons are for beginners and advanced skiers. Check which facilities and services are currently available before making plans.

When choosing a holiday apartment, your preferred mix of activities can therefore be a useful starting point: would you rather focus on the museum, city park and promenade, or on mountain trails and ski runs?
