At the museum in Milkovo, a memorial hall is dedicated to the life and work of Itelmen poet G. G. Porotov, the “Obelisk” monument commemorates district residents who fell in battle, and Nulten introduces visitors to the history, present-day way of life and traditions of the Evens. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is helpful to ask: should Milkovo’s local culture be the focus, or are you more interested in the nature of the wider Kamchatka Region?

Museum and memorial site in Milkovo

In the museum’s fifth hall in Milkovo, the memorial hall, original items from G. G. Porotov’s personal collection tell the story of his life and work. Porotov was an Itelmen poet, prose writer, musician and folklorist. After his death, his daughter L. G. Porotova donated the items to the museum. The exhibition is scheduled to run until 31 December 2026. Literature, music and folklore all feature equally in Porotov’s work.

The “Obelisk” monument stands in Milkovo at the intersection of Partizanskaya and Leninskaya streets and is accessible to residents and visitors. It commemorates Milkovo District residents who fell in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. The two sites have different focuses: the museum centres on an artist’s biography, while the monument commemorates the victims of war.

Nulten: traditions and music

Nulten’s visitor programme introduces the history, present-day way of life and traditions of the Evens. A visit to the Nulten camp also includes the “Ochchen” traditional dwelling, where traditional dog harnesses and a sled are on display. The visit therefore combines a cultural introduction with a look inside a dwelling containing exhibits.

With advance booking, the visit can be supplemented with an approximately 50-minute concert by the Milkovo Itelmen folk ensemble “Kyksha-ay”. Arrange the visit with the operator before your trip; the concert is an additional feature that must be booked separately. At one edition of the “Selskie vstrechi” festival, performances were given by the “Milkovskie zori” song and dance ensemble, the “Milkovskaya volnitsa” Cossack song ensemble, the “Kyksha-ay” national ensemble, the “Nezabudochki” vocal group and the “Mikstura” ensemble; soloists Oleg Selivanov and Viktoria Zabigailo also took part.

Nalychevo Nature Park in the Kamchatka Region

A broader travel option is the Kamchatka Region as a destination. Seven tourist routes run through Nalychevo Nature Park, and they are accessible at different times of year. The number of routes and their seasonal accessibility may change, so check the latest information locally before your trip.

The park has around 200 thermal springs, grouped according to their different hydrochemical properties, temperatures and balneological characteristics. In the central part of the nature park are hot and cold mineral springs with carbonic, arsenic- and boron-containing waters, enriched with mineral trace elements. The Nalychevo Valley is surrounded by the volcanoes Zhupanovsky, Avachinsky, Kozelsky, Koryaksky and Dzenzur. This nature park landscape offers a regional perspective on Kamchatka and is on a different scale from Milkovo’s cultural sites.

These themes offer different ways to choose the focus of your trip and the destination that suits you.
