Prichaly: Fishing History on the Curonian Lagoon
Accommodation in Prichaly
Prichaly lies at the mouth of the Promyslovaya River (Inse Stream) on the Curonian Lagoon. The settlement was formerly called Inse and was later renamed Prichaly. The Inse parish was established in 1570.
Fishing and boats in the settlement’s history
In historic Inse, fishing was the residents’ main occupation and source of income for a long time. Fishers took sailboats or rowboats out onto the Curonian Lagoon; fishing from motorized boats was prohibited.
In the past, many fishers crossed the lagoon in kurenas. Typical of the area, this single-masted, flat-bottomed fishing boat was called a Kurenkahn in German, was built from oak, and measured up to 14 metres in length. The Kurenkahn is therefore a specific boat type in the local tradition: its name, construction and maximum length give the history of lagoon fishing a distinctive profile.
The church and historic views of the settlement
The Inse parish was established in 1570. Until 1684, the Inse church was independent; afterwards, it became a branch church of the Kallningken (Prokhladnoye) parish. A second Inse church was built in 1700 in the centre of the village by the water. The historic building was made of wood, was octagonal, and had a small tower on the roof ridge. The church was still standing after the Second World War and was used for economic purposes; in 1964, it was demolished with tractors. The timeline thus runs from the founding of the parish through the change in its status to the demolition of the church building.
Old fishers’ houses have been preserved in Prichaly; there is also a pre-war cemetery. Together with the history of the parish and lagoon fishing, these places offer different points of connection for learning about the village. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider whether the settlement’s history and its location on the lagoon should be the focus of your stay.
The Losinaja dolina Pait ecotourism complex is located near Prichaly. It is another named landmark in the area around the destination.
More places to explore in Kaliningrad Oblast
The transboundary Curonian Spit extends beyond the region, within the wider destination of Kaliningrad Oblast: the sandy peninsula is 98 kilometres long and between 350 metres and 3.8 kilometres wide. It forms a natural barrier between the salty Baltic Sea and the fresh water of the Curonian Lagoon.
The Kurskaya Kosa National Park has seven ecological nature trails and a visitor centre. Trails that are accessible year-round, around the clock, include “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometre 37 and “Vysota Efa” at kilometre 42. “Tantsuyushchiy les” is known for its bizarre, zigzag-twisted tree trunks. Trails may be temporarily closed due to weather or necessary restoration work, so check the latest notices before visiting.
A different visiting condition applies to the “Fringilla” ecotrail: it runs through the grounds of the Rybachy Biological Station’s field station and can be visited from April to October only as part of a guided tour for at least ten people. The difference between trails accessible year-round and this seasonal guided-tour option helps with planning nature experiences in the region. These regional destinations complement Prichaly’s settlement history; they are not descriptions of the village itself.
