Ivanovka is at the heart of your search for a holiday apartment. When planning your trip, it is also worth looking at the wider destination of Kaliningrad Oblast: the Curonian Spit combines a striking coastal landscape with protected natural areas, while museums and extensive forests offer other focal points. First decide which of these themes matter to you; then compare the places you want to visit with the exact location of your accommodation and the routes involved.

Curonian Spit: Coast and nature trails

The Curonian Spit is a 98-kilometre-long sandy peninsula, between 350 metres and 3.8 kilometres wide. As a natural barrier, it separates the salty Baltic Sea from the freshwater Curonian Lagoon. The transboundary Russian-Lithuanian World Heritage Site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 in the “Cultural Landscape” category. This landscape alone makes clear that this is not just about a beach visit, but also about the distinctive transition between two bodies of water.

On the Russian part of the spit, there are seven ecological educational trails and three tourist excursion routes. The “Kurshskaya kosa” National Park was established on 6 November 1987 by Resolution No. 423 on the southern half of the spit. At the time, this part was administratively within Zelenogradskiy District of Kaliningrad Oblast in the RSFSR. Twelve stairway crossings provide access to the Baltic Sea beach there, each with a car park.

Educational trails and their features

Six named educational trails lead to different nature-related highlights: “Korolevskiy bor” is at kilometre 6, “Vysota Myullera” at kilometre 32, “Rossittenskiy les” at kilometre 33, “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometre 37, “Vysota Efa” at kilometre 42 and “Ozero Lebed” at kilometre 45 of the spit. The six trails listed here are accessible around the clock all year. However, weather or necessary restoration work may require temporary closures. So check the park’s latest notices before visiting.

A special access requirement applies to the “Fringilla” ecotrail: it runs through the grounds of the field station of the “Rybachiy” Biological Station. From April to October, visits are only possible as part of a guided tour for at least ten people. If this location is part of your plans, take this group requirement into account when organising your visit.

The visitor centre also has seasonal opening hours. From May to September, it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. From October to April, it is open five days a week and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Since opening hours may change, confirm the schedule with the park before your arrival.

Forest landscapes and amber museums

The coniferous forest “Tantsuyushchiy les” is known for its bizarre, zigzag-shaped twisted tree trunks. The educational trail is at the 37th kilometre of the Curonian Spit, four kilometres north of the settlement of Rybachiy. This links the forest’s natural appeal with a precisely specified location on the spit. In the southeast of Kaliningrad Oblast, “Vishtynetskiy” National Park provides another forest focus: the area covers more than 27,600 hectares of extensive forest landscapes. The national park was established on 1 April 2024 by Government Resolution No. 412, based on the nature park of the same name. The area is also known by its former names, Rominten Forest and Red Forest.

Two museums in the Yantarny urban district offer a cultural focus. The “Yantarny zamok” museum exhibition complex is located in the centre of Yantarny. The “Istoriya dobychi yantarya” museum complex is on the shore of Lake “Sinyavinskogo”. This lets you consider forest landscapes and places associated with amber as separate themes for planning your trip.
