Nesterovsky District combines the forest landscape of the Rominten Heath with springs and places associated with literary history. In Krasnolesye, an open-air exhibition, spring routes and a monument to those who fell in the First World War come together; Chistye Prudy adds its own cultural touch with its literary museum. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, the focus of your trip can help you decide: forest and trails, or museums and memorial sites.

Krasnolesye: Stones, Springs and Trails

The Vyshteynets Ecomuseum in Krasnolesye includes the open-air exhibition “Kamennye istorii” (“Stone Stories”). It lends a cultural touch to the themes of nature and springs. The museum also offers walks along forest trails with local residents; arrange your participation with the museum.

One Ecomuseum excursion takes visitors to the area around Krasnolesye, to the valley of the headwaters of the Sinjaja River. The elevation difference there reaches 50 metres. Visitors can see the river’s source, drink spring water and visit the ruins of the former mill settlement of Prasberg. The excursion is offered during the snow-free season for groups of at least ten people; book in advance.

Two routes to springs begin at the edge of Krasnolesye. The shorter route is about 800 metres long and leads directly to the springs. The longer one is 1.5 kilometres long and passes through the former settlement of Prasberg, by ruins and along a linden avenue. You can choose between a direct route to the springs and a route featuring traces of the former settlement. Check the current park access rules before your visit.

Literary History in Chistye Prudy

The literary museum in Chistye Prudy opened on 11 October 1979 in a restored former Lutheran church building. It was previously known as the “Memorial Museum of K. Donelaitis, a Classic of Lithuanian Literature”. The poet’s remains were reinterred in a purpose-built crypt.

Kristijonas Donelaitis became pastor of the Lutheran congregation in Tolminkiemis (Chistye Prudy) in November 1743 and remained in the post until his death. There, between 1765 and 1775, he wrote his major work, the poem “The Seasons”. Updated following renovation work from 2019 to 2021, the exhibition in the parsonage includes original 18th-century household items as well as copies of historical documents.

Rominten Heath: Nature and Historical Traces

The Rominten Heath extends across Nesterovsky District in Kaliningrad Oblast and the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland. Vyshteynetsky National Park lies within the Rominten Heath. Possible activities there include walks and cycling, as well as relaxing by the lakes. The forest landscape thus combines experiences of nature with traces of historic buildings and transport routes.

The forest contains the foundations of Göring’s former estate and stone bridges dating from the Kingdom of Prussia. Sections of a railway line and a large bridge with a viaduct-like structure have also survived. These remains add historic architectural traces to the landscape. In the centre of Krasnolesye, there is also a monument to those who fell in the First World War of 1914–1918.

When searching for a holiday apartment, you can choose based on the focus of your trip: the Rominten Heath and the spring routes offer scenery and outdoor activity, while Chistye Prudy offers literary history and a museum. The monument in Krasnolesye adds a First World War memorial to the cultural side of your trip. This gives nature, local history and literature their own place in your holiday plans.
