Nagornoye: Memorial Plaque and Places of Remembrance
Accommodation in Nagornoye
Nagornoye is home to a specific place of remembrance; the natural attractions of the wider destination of Kaliningrad Oblast offer a different focus. This allows you to consider the local history of remembrance and the landscape of the Curonian Spit as distinct themes for your trip.
Places of remembrance in and near Nagornoye
A memorial plaque in Nagornoye marks the burial site of Italian prisoners of the Nazi camp “Shtalag 1A Stablag”. The International Cemetery for Prisoners of Stalag 1A “Shtablak” lies about 1.5 km southwest of the village.
The cemetery is associated with prisoners who died in captivity between 1939 and 1944; the memorial at the cemetery was opened in 1989. If you include these sites in your travel plans, check access arrangements in advance.
Natural attractions in the wider destination of Kaliningrad Oblast
One of the natural highlights of Kaliningrad Oblast is the national park on the Russian part of the Curonian Spit. The spit is a 98 km-long sandy peninsula, between 350 m and 3.8 km wide. It forms a natural barrier between the salty Baltic Sea and the freshwater Curonian Lagoon. The cross-border Russian-Lithuanian World Heritage Site “Curonian Spit” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 in the “Cultural Landscape” category.
The “Kurshskaya kosa” National Park was established on 6 November 1987 by Resolution No. 423 on the southern half of the spit. The national park on the Russian part of the Curonian Spit has seven ecological trails and three tourist excursion routes.
The six named ecological trails include “Korolevskiy bor” at kilometre 6, “Vysota Myullera” at kilometre 32, “Rossittenskiy les” at kilometre 33, “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometre 37, “Vysota Efa” at kilometre 42 and “Ozero Lebed” at kilometre 45. These trails are accessible around the clock and year-round; they may be temporarily closed due to weather or necessary restoration work. Check the park’s current notices before visiting.
The coniferous forest “Tantsuyushchiy les” is known for its bizarre, zigzagging, twisted tree trunks. It is located at kilometre 37 of the Curonian Spit, four kilometres north of the settlement of Rybachiy. For a different natural focus, twelve stairway crossings on the Russian part provide access to the Baltic Sea beach; there is a car park at each crossing.
The visitor requirement for the “Fringilla” eco-trail is particularly important: the trail passes through the grounds of the “Rybachiy” Biological Station’s field station. From April to October, visits are only possible as part of a guided tour with at least ten people.
You can also plan your visit to the national park centre around the seasons. From May to September, it is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. From October to April, it is open five days a week, except Mondays and Tuesdays. Check the opening hours with the park before your trip.
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide which plans are your priority: should Nagornoye and its history of remembrance be the main focus, or are you primarily planning to visit natural and beach attractions in the national park of Kaliningrad Oblast? Choose your accommodation’s location to suit these priorities, and check the conditions for individual attractions in advance.
