Lesnoy: Lighthouse and Curonian Spit
Accommodation in Lesnoy
Lesnoy is located within the Curonian Spit National Park. The 40-metre-high Lesnoy Lighthouse, built in 1982, stands on the promenade in the village. From the sea, it appears as a white-and-red rectangle; its signal is visible across the sea and the lagoon for up to 17 miles. These two details show different aspects of the site: its geometric shape when viewed from the sea and the range of its signal. The lighthouse thus offers a specific point of reference when choosing where to stay, combined with its location on the promenade.
The lighthouse and its predecessor: two construction phases
The lighthouse’s history includes a predecessor and the construction of the current lighthouse in 1982. The older lighthouse stood closer to the sea. A storm surge damaged it in 1975, after which it was dismantled. Its concrete foundation can be seen on the beach by the promenade. This makes it possible to distinguish two traces from different periods: the lighthouse built in 1982 and the visible foundation of the former tower. The previous location also explains why the storm surge plays a part in the history of the village: the predecessor stood closer to the sea.
The Curonian Spit in its wider regional context
Within the broader destination of Kaliningrad Oblast, the Curonian Spit shifts the focus from a single village to a distinctive landform. The sandy peninsula is 98 kilometres long and between 350 metres and 3.8 kilometres wide. It forms a natural barrier between the salty Baltic Sea and the fresh water of the Curonian Lagoon. The Curonian Spit is also a Russian-Lithuanian transboundary World Heritage Site: in 2000, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in the “Cultural Landscape” category. Alongside the local lighthouse history, the landscape and cultural heritage are therefore additional themes to explore during a stay in Kaliningrad Oblast.
Nature trails and their different conditions
In the national park on the Russian part of the Curonian Spit, there are seven ecological nature trails and three tourist excursion routes. The trails offer different experiences and are located at different kilometre points along the spit: “Korolevskiy bor” at kilometre 6, “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometre 37 and “Vysota Efa” at kilometre 42. The coniferous forest “Tantsuyushchiy les” is known for its bizarre, zigzag-shaped, twisted tree trunks. Its eco-trail is four kilometres north of the settlement of Rybachiy. The six named eco-trails are accessible around the clock and year-round; they may be temporarily closed due to weather or necessary restoration work. Check current notices before visiting.
Access to the “Fringilla” eco-trail is regulated differently: it runs through the grounds of the field station of the Biological Station “Rybachiy”. From April to October, visits are possible only as part of a guided tour with at least ten people. This difference is important when planning: temporary closures should be taken into account on the six trails mentioned, whereas “Fringilla” requires a guided tour and a minimum group size.
Visitor centre and choosing where to stay
The national park’s visitor centre is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm from May to September. From October to April, it is open five days a week, but not on Mondays or Tuesdays. Opening hours may change; confirm the current schedule with the park before your visit.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Lesnoy, it helps to decide what you want to focus on. The village’s specific points of interest include the lighthouse on the promenade and the history of its predecessor. The wider travel setting of Kaliningrad Oblast also includes the nature trails and landscape of the Curonian Spit.
