St. Anne’s Church gives Gvardeyskoye a clear historical landmark: the history of its construction, its architecture and the story of a notable person come together here. The wider travel destination of Kaliningrad Oblast also offers its own coastal, forest and cultural attractions.

St. Anne’s Church: Architecture and Local History

The Lutheran St. Anne’s Church in Mühlhausen, now Gvardeyskoye, was rebuilt in the 16th century. Its 35-metre-high tower is made of brick, and the church is a cultural monument of regional significance. The tower gives the building a specific architectural scale, while its monument designation reflects its cultural standing.

Another historical trace leads to 1570, when Margarete, Martin Luther’s daughter, was buried in St. Anne’s Church. The 16th-century construction history and this precisely dated event stand side by side. Those interested in church and local history will find both a distinctive building and a connection to a well-known person.

Nature and Cultural Experiences in Kaliningrad Oblast

The Curonian Spit is a sandy peninsula 98 kilometres long and between 350 metres and 3.8 kilometres wide. As a natural barrier, it separates the salty Baltic Sea from the freshwater Curonian Lagoon. On its southern half, the Kurshskaya Kosa National Park was established on 6 November 1987 by Resolution No. 423. The transboundary Russian-Lithuanian Curonian Spit was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 in the cultural landscape category.

The Russian part of the national park has seven environmental education trails and three tourist excursion routes. The named eco-trails include “Korolevskiy bor” at kilometre 6, “Vysota Myullera” at kilometre 32, “Rossittenskiy les” at kilometre 33, “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometre 37, “Vysota Efa” at kilometre 42 and “Ozero Lebed'” at kilometre 45. These six trails are accessible year-round, around the clock, but may be temporarily closed due to weather or necessary restoration work. The coniferous forest “Tantsuyushchiy les” is known for its bizarre, zigzagging tree trunks; it lies four kilometres north of the settlement of Rybachiy.

Different visitor conditions apply to the “Fringilla” eco-trail: it runs through the grounds of the Rybachiy Biological Station field station and can be visited from April to October only as part of a guided tour with at least ten people. Twelve stairway crossings provide access to the Baltic Sea beach within the national park, each with a car park. The visitor centre is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May to September. From October to April, it is open five days a week, except Mondays and Tuesdays. Check the opening hours with the park before your trip; trail conditions may also change temporarily.

Forests and Amber as Other Regional Attractions

Yantarnyy has two more cultural attractions: the “Yantarnyy zamok” museum and exhibition complex in the centre and the “Istoriya dobychi yantarya” museum complex on the shore of Lake “Sinyavinskogo”. A different landscape defines Vishtynetskiy National Park in the southeast of Kaliningrad Oblast. It was established on 1 April 2024 by Government Resolution No. 412, based on the nature park of the same name, and covers more than 27,600 hectares. The area’s extensive forests are also known as the Rominten Forest and the Red Forest.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Gvardeyskoye, you might first consider whether the history of St. Anne’s Church should be the focus of your trip. The spit, nature trails, forests and amber museums offer other regional attractions in Kaliningrad Oblast. The right choice for you depends on whether you are most interested in the building and its history or in discovering the region’s varied landscapes and cultural attractions.
