Gastellovo: School History and Memorial Plaque
Accommodation in Gastellovo
A memorial plaque on the village club building and the former school building of Gross Friedrichsdorf give Gastellovo two distinct historical points of reference. The plaque is dedicated to Nikolai Frantsevich Gastello, a Soviet military aviator; its installation was reported on October 20, 2023. The history of the school building goes back to the early 1930s and spans several changes of use up to the closure of the school.
School, Architecture and Local History
The school was built between 1930 and 1933. The building was U-shaped and made of red brick. It was converted into residential accommodation before the start of the Second World War. In early 1945, it housed a field hospital of the Soviet Army. The school ceased operations in 2014. The sequence is important for understanding the chronology: the conversion into residential accommodation took place before the war; the field hospital belonged to a later phase of the war, while the school closed only decades later. Architecture, civilian use, wartime history and the end of the school thus stand alongside one another as clearly distinct chapters.
Landscapes and Excursions in Kaliningrad Oblast
A distinct nature and coastal highlight within the broader travel destination of Kaliningrad Oblast is the Curonian Spit. The sandy peninsula is 98 kilometres long and between 350 metres and 3.8 kilometres wide. It forms a natural barrier between the salt water of the Baltic Sea and the fresh water of the Curonian Lagoon. As a cross-border Russian-Lithuanian World Heritage Site, the Curonian Spit was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 in the “Cultural Landscape” category.
On the southern half of the Spit, the national park was established on November 6, 1987, by Resolution No. 423. The Russian section has seven ecological educational trails and three tourist excursion routes. Six named eco-trails are located at kilometres 6, 32, 33, 37, 42 and 45; they are accessible year-round, around the clock. However, weather or necessary restoration work may require temporary closures. Check the park’s latest notices before setting out.
The named trails include “Korolevskiy bor” at kilometre 6, “Vysota Myullera” at kilometre 32, “Rossittenskiy les” at kilometre 33, “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometre 37, “Vysota Efa” at kilometre 42 and “Ozero Lebed” at kilometre 45. The “Tantsuyushchiy les” eco-trail lies four kilometres north of the settlement of Rybachiy. The coniferous forest there is known for its bizarre, zigzag-shaped, twisted tree trunks.
Twelve stairway crossings provide access to the Baltic Sea beach on the Russian section; each crossing has a car park. The national park visitor centre is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May to September. From October to April, it is open five days a week, except Mondays and Tuesdays. Confirm the opening hours before your trip.
