More than 65 percent of the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria is mountainous. Accordingly, there is a wide range of themes that can shape a trip: slopes on Elbrus, routes through a high-mountain nature reserve, the Chegem Gorge and a museum about the history of the battles for the Caucasus heights. Whether you want to focus on nature, outdoor activities or culture, the different highlights give your trip planning a clear direction.

High mountains between the Caucasus ranges and river headwaters

The Kabardino-Balkarian State High-Mountain Nature Reserve manages a protected area in the Cherek and Chegem districts. The area stretches along the Greater Caucasus and the Lateral Caucasus ranges and includes the headwaters of the Cherek-Balkar, Cherek-Bezengi and Chegem rivers. Mountain ranges and river headwaters are therefore equally part of this natural landscape. For visitors who enjoy discovering landscapes along a route, the reserve offers several named destinations and sections.

Elbrus: Slopes and altitude

The Elbrus ski area has 20 kilometres of slopes of varying difficulty and three gondola lifts. Wide red, blue and green runs are suitable for skiers and snowboarders of different ability levels. An artificial snowmaking system maintains a consistent snow cover on the slopes; its seasonal operation may vary. The area can therefore be assessed using several specific features: slope length, difficulty levels and lifts.

The upper Garabashi station is at an altitude of 3,847 metres and can be reached via three gondola lift sections. If you are factoring the ski area's altitude into your plans, check the current operating conditions before setting out. The information about the slopes and gondola lifts describes the character of the Elbrus resort; it also makes clear that a ski-focused trip is different from a multi-day hike in the reserve.

Reserve routes with different seasonal operating periods

The Kabardino-Balkarian State Nature Reserve has four tourist routes: “Mizhirgi”, “Shaurtu”, “To the Bezengi Glacier” and “To the Narzan Mineral Spring”. From May to October, “Mizhirgi”, “Shaurtu” and “To the Narzan Mineral Spring” are open, as are the “Zhiginzhi Waterfall” and “Bezengi Glacier” sections of the “To the Bezengi Glacier” route. These routes and sections are intended for visitors of different ages. The categorised “Bezengi Glacier – Lake Boran-Köl” section of the “To the Bezengi Glacier” route, by contrast, is open from July to August. Before setting out, check with the reserve for the current status, access conditions and whether a permit is required for the route in question.

The “To the Bezengi Glacier” hiking route is 26.1 kilometres long and takes three days. Its final section crosses the Bezengi Glacier, also known as Ullu-Chiran, is rated difficulty grade II and may only be traversed with a mountain guide. This requirement applies to the final section. The route offers the chance to experience the altitudinal zones, diverse landscapes, and the flora and fauna of the Central Caucasus. Possible wildlife sightings include Caucasian tur, bearded vultures, griffon vultures, golden eagles, Caucasian grouse and other bird species; the flowering of the Caucasian rhododendron is another highlight. Wildlife sightings are possibilities, not guaranteed.

Gorge, spa resort and history

The Chegem Gorge narrows into a ravine with steep walls up to 300 metres high. The Su-Auzu waterfall wall is a major attraction there. The Nalchik spa resort is designated as a specially protected natural area—another facet of the regional landscape alongside its high-mountain areas.

In Terskol, the Museum of the Defence of the Elbrus Region focuses on the battles for the Caucasus heights from 1942 to 1943. Exhibits include original Soviet and German weapons and equipment, rare wartime photographs and documents, and personal belongings of people who took part in the battles. Guided tours combine a visit to the exhibition with a walk to a viewing platform offering panoramic views of the battle sites. Check current visitor arrangements and the tour schedule before your visit.

Choose the focus for your holiday rental

When looking for a holiday apartment or house, it helps to decide first what kind of trip you want. The Elbrus resort means slopes and gondola lifts; the Bezengi route is explicitly described as a three-day hike. The gorge landscape and museum offer other points of interest. Consider which of these themes matters most to your travel group and use it to guide your search. If your plans include a reserve route, take its season into account and check the current conditions in advance.
