Discover Kizlyar: Culture and City History
Accommodation in Kizlyar
Kizlyar’s culture and history can be explored through its cultural and historic sites: an ensemble of Kazakh songs, a museum named after a Kizlyar native, churches with different historical dates, and traces of the former fortress give the city several distinct themes. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish Kizlyar’s own sites from other destinations in the Republic of Dagestan.
Music and Remembrance in Kizlyar
The Kizlyar State Terek Ensemble of Kazakh Songs was founded in the 1990s and received state ensemble status in 2000. These two dates mark different milestones: its founding and its subsequent state recognition. Its name also identifies its musical focus. For anyone interested in culture, this offers a clearly defined aspect of the city’s history.
The Kizlyar Historical and Local Lore Museum named after P. I. Bagration is the largest branch of the A. Takho-Godi National Museum of the Republic of Dagestan. It is named after Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration, a Kizlyar native and general described as a hero of the Patriotic War of 1812. Two specific connections come together here: the museum’s history and the origins of the person it is named after. The museum offers a different way to explore the past than the song ensemble, which was founded in the 1990s.
Churches, Fortress Wall, and City Park
The churches also point to different historical periods. St. Nicholas Church, now a convent of the Exaltation of the Cross, was founded in 1795. The Church of St. George the Victorious, by contrast, was rebuilt in 1997 on Sovetskaya Street in Kizlyar. Founding and rebuilding are not the same: the dates help distinguish the history of these two buildings.
The fortress wall is located at the 50th Anniversary of October Square. Another trace of the past can be found in the city park: it was laid out after the fortress was abolished in 1857. Together with the different dates associated with the churches, this connection shows that Kizlyar’s local history cannot be tied to a single date. The fortress wall and the park are each distinct sites with their own histories.
Other Historical Perspectives in the Republic of Dagestan
Travel beyond Kizlyar into the Republic of Dagestan, and you will encounter other, quite different themes. In Derbent, the fortifications and the medieval buildings of the old town, the Magalims, form a cultural landscape. The citadel contains archaeological remains of a bathhouse, several underground water reservoirs, a Christian church dating to the 5th century, and a mosque dating to the 8th century. Steep slopes surround the citadel on three sides. Its stone walls are 2.5 to 3.2 meters thick, more than 700 meters long, and 10 to 15 meters high; nine of the original 14 gates remain.
The mountain wall of Derbent’s fortifications conveys another sense of scale: it stretches 40 kilometers westward across the mountains and completely blocks the pass between the sea and the mountains. This scale differs markedly from Kizlyar’s individual urban landmarks. When choosing a destination, it is therefore useful to ask whether you are mainly looking for local culture and city history or would like to plan more broadly around the historic landscapes of the Republic of Dagestan.
Landscape and Seasonal Differences
The natural attractions of the Republic of Dagestan offer yet more possibilities. Tobot Waterfall lies at an altitude of 1,690 meters, at the start of Tsolotl Canyon on the Khunzakh Plateau. It is one of the highest waterfalls in the North Caucasus; its exact drop is unknown, with estimates ranging from 50 to 100 meters. The seasons also shape its appearance: Tobot has its greatest flow from May to July, while in winter it freezes and turns into a large icicle. If you are weighing up different travel dates, this provides a clear seasonal difference to consider.
At the Sarykum Dune, metal walkways lead up the dune; the trail is called the “Path of the Wise Turtle.” Not all of the dune is open to visitors. Check the current visitor rules before going. When traveling with children, you can choose your trip’s focus based on these specific differences: Kizlyar’s city history and culture offer a different emphasis from the landscapes and fortifications of the Republic of Dagestan. This can help you first decide what kind of discoveries you would like your trip to center on.
