Cheboksarskiy District can be explored through very different themes: cultural history in Kugesi and the landscape around Lake Izyar. The Museum “Bichurin i sovremennost” focuses on N. Y. Bichurin; around the rectangular lake, coniferous and deciduous mixed forest, along with the shallow, sandy eastern shore, shape the landscape. These highlights offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Bichurin’s scientific history in Kugesi

The Museum “Bichurin i sovremennost” in Kugesi opened in 2001 in the hometown of N. Y. Bichurin. In the “Nauchnyi podvig Bichurina” hall, an exhibition is dedicated to the scholar: Bichurin (1777–1835) was a founder of Russian sinology and Mongolian studies, and a recipient of the Demidov Prizes. His monastic name was Father Iakinf. The exhibition covers his achievements and scientific works, and is laid out as a reading room. Alongside his life story, it highlights his scholarly work and the distinctive way it is presented. The “Bichurinskiy sad” area is also located on the museum grounds.

The “Chuvashskaya vyshivka ‘Paha tere’” Museum is also located in the settlement of Kugesi. Its focus differs from that of the Bichurin Museum. The stated opening hours may change, so please confirm your visit directly with the museum in advance.

Lake Izyar and its landscape

The rectangular Lake Izyar is surrounded by coniferous and deciduous mixed forest; its eastern shore is shallow and sandy. While the museums in Kugesi tell stories about people and cultural themes, the lake is described through its natural features: its shape, forest surroundings and shoreline define the landscape. If you would like to focus your stay more on nature than on museum themes, Izyar is a distinct highlight to include in your trip planning.

Further cultural context: Republic of Chuvashia

In the wider destination of the Republic of Chuvashia, Cheboksary is home to the Chuvash Embroidery Museum, a branch of the Chuvash National Museum. It opened on June 23, 2015, in a historic two-storey building in the city centre; the building was initially used as an infirmary for soldiers of the Tsarist army. The first exhibition hall presents the history of Chuvash folk embroidery from the 18th century and its professional development in the 20th century. Among the oldest and most valuable exhibits are an 18th-century women’s shirt with three pairs of kĕskĕ chest motifs, a bridal blanket and the groom’s towels with stitches on both sides.
