Kaslinskiy District: Cast-Iron Art and History
Accommodation in Kaslinskiy District
Kaslinskiy District offers a distinctive way to explore the history of metalworking in the Urals: the Kasli Historical and Art Museum is devoted to Kasli cast-iron casting. Churches and monuments in Kasli add further historical points of interest. If you are looking for a vacation rental, you can first consider whether cast-iron art, architecture, and memorial sites should be the focus of your trip.
Kasli Cast Iron: Craft and Collection
A significant part of the Kasli Historical and Art Museum’s collection consists of cast-iron art: sculptural groups, statuettes, candlesticks, plates, ashtrays, and inkwells. They were made from original models by 19th- and 20th-century sculptors. The collection also includes several hundred cast-iron objects, including a cast-iron watch chain. The examples thus range from figurative works to everyday objects.
Another way to explore Kasli cast iron is through the exhibition pavilion made from 1,500 pieces. It was awarded the Grand Gold Medal at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair; it is currently on display at the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts. The subject therefore encompasses both the museum’s cast-iron art and a pavilion whose current exhibition location is outside Kasli.
Churches and Monuments in Kasli
The Church of the Ascension is designated a historical monument of federal significance. Beside it, the stone Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1861 as a winter church. The two churches can therefore be considered together in terms of their location and the construction history of the newer church.
Other monuments commemorate different periods in the city’s history. The monument to the heroes who fell for the Revolution stands in central Kasli, opposite the Metallist factory club and beside the mass grave of people killed by Kolchak’s band. The monument to the Leninist Komsomol commemorates the work and military history of the Leninist Komsomol in the city of Kasli. Another memorial commemorates residents of Kasli who were killed in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945.
Monumental art is also part of Kasli’s attractions: the cast-iron worker statue was created in 1922. The house museum of sculptor A. V. Chirkin is among the sights of Kaslinskiy District. Together, the museum, churches, and memorial sites offer different points of interest for a culturally focused trip.
Nature Trails in the Wider Destination of Chelyabinsk Oblast
Taganai National Park lies in the western part of Chelyabinsk Oblast, in the Taganai mountain massif in the Southern Urals. Its landscape includes rocky peaks, stone rivers, mountain streams, taiga, and tundra. At 853 meters, Chernaya Skala is one of the northern peaks of the Nazminsky Range and is made of white quartzite.
The “Ves’ Taganai za 600 shagov” ecological trail is just over 1.5 kilometers long and passes through scenic areas around Chernaya Skala, as well as natural complexes typical of Taganai National Park. It is one of the park’s easier excursion routes, suitable for people of all ages and requiring no special physical preparation. The paved path has an observation platform and is accessible to wheelchair users; check current conditions before your visit.
Other routes vary in length and elevation profile: the easy ecological trail to the Zyuratkul Ridge is six kilometers one way and gains 460 meters in elevation; children can also manage it. The five-kilometer Malaya Medvezhya Trail starts in the settlement of Zyuratkul. When choosing a vacation rental, you can then consider whether the cultural sites in Kasli or nature destinations in the wider destination of Chelyabinsk Oblast will play a bigger role in your trip.
