With the Novo-Cheremshansky Nickel Quarry, Cheremshanka offers an unusual, clearly defined theme: mining history, a large-scale pit and geological traces of ancient plants come together here. The quarry lies on the northeastern edge of the settlement. Those interested in landscapes whose forms are closely connected to their industrial past will find in Cheremshanka a tangible way to explore this interplay.

Nickel Ore Mining and the Dimensions of the Pit

Nickel ore was mined at the Novo-Cheremshansky Nickel Quarry for the Ufaley Nickel Plant from 1936 to 1988. This period gives the site a clear historical context. At the same time, its dimensions make the pit remarkable as a landscape feature: it has several levels, is 250 metres deep and has a diameter of 1.5 kilometres. Depth and diameter describe two different dimensions—the vertical cut and the broad expanse. The quarry can therefore be understood both through its industrial use and its distinctive shape.

Geological Natural Monument and Remains of Ancient Plants

The quarry is part of the geological natural monument “Nickel Profile of the Weathering Crust in the Southern Urals,” which was declared a geological natural monument of Chelyabinsk Oblast on 25 April 1981 by Resolution No. 194. The lignites in the upper part of the quarry contain carbonised plant remains that are about 90 million years old. This trace reaches far beyond the history of mining: at the same site, the historic nickel ore story meets plant material from a much more ancient period.

There is an observation platform at the quarry. Check whether access is currently possible before your visit.

More Nature and Hiking Experiences in Chelyabinsk Oblast

The wider travel destination of Chelyabinsk Oblast offers other perspectives on the landscape. The geographical boundary between Europe and Asia runs through the oblast, which has three national parks. The oblast is also known regionally as the “Land of 3,000 Lakes.” Taganai National Park is in the western part of the oblast, in the Taganai mountain cluster of the Southern Urals. Its landscape features include rocky peaks, stone rivers, mountain streams, taiga and tundra. Chornaya Skala, also in Chelyabinsk Oblast, is one of the northern peaks of the Nazminsky Range at 853 metres and is made of white quartzite.

The “Ves Taganai za 600 Shagov” ecological trail is a shorter hiking option in the wider travel destination of Chelyabinsk Oblast. It is just over 1.5 kilometres long and passes through scenic areas of the Chornaya Skala area as well as natural complexes typical of Taganai National Park. Its facilities include a surfaced path and an observation platform; the trail is accessible to wheelchair users. Check the current conditions before your visit.

Another route profile is offered by the easy ecological hiking trail to the Zyuratkul Ridge, also in Chelyabinsk Oblast. It is 6 kilometres long one way and climbs 460 metres; children can manage it too. The details highlight different planning considerations: the Taganai route is notable for its length of just over 1.5 kilometres and its surfaced facilities, while the trail to the Zyuratkul Ridge is defined by its one-way distance and elevation gain.

When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to plan around these features separately: Cheremshanka is associated with the nickel quarry and its industrial and geological history; the trails at Taganai and the Zyuratkul Ridge are examples from the wider travel destination of Chelyabinsk Oblast. If the quarry is your main interest, you can focus your search on Cheremshanka. If you are primarily planning one of the routes mentioned, consider its specific location as a separate factor when choosing where to stay.
