In the Ivolginsky District, Buddhist sacred architecture meets much older traces of human settlement. The Ivolginsky Datsan is a center of Russian Buddhism and an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists from Russia and around the world. Thousands of pilgrims and tourists from different countries visit each year. The Museum of the History of the Datsan and archaeological evidence offer further perspectives on the district’s cultural history.

Ivolginsky Datsan: Pilgrimage Site and Sacred Architecture

The Ivolginsky Datsan is a historical and architectural monument as well as a museum of sacred architecture. It includes a Buddhist university and numerous sacred relics. The most important is considered to be the precious body of Pandito Khambo Lama XII Dashi-Dorzho Itigelov, which is housed in the palace temple of the 12th Pandito Khambo Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigelov and is described as imperishable. The temple was reconstructed in 2008 using old photographs of the Devaschin-Dugan of the Yangazhinsky Datsan.

Even individual details tell of the Datsan’s connections beyond its religious buildings. A sacred Bodhi tree grows in the greenhouse; its saplings were brought from Bodh Gaya, India, by lamas of the Datsan in 1956. A statue by Dashinima Namdakov is titled “Little Buddha” and was donated to the Datsan in 2011. Together with the university and the relics, these elements give the Datsan a cultural and religious dimension distinct from its architecture alone.

The Museum of the History of the Ivolginsky Datsan

The museum is located on the grounds of the Datsan, on the first floor of the Buddhist Institute “Dashi Choykhorling” building in Verkhnyaya Ivolga. Its exhibition presents the history of the spread of Buddhism in Russia and includes more than 300 objects of Buddhist culture and art. These include thangkas, woodblock prints, sacred texts, sutras, manuscripts and sculptures of Buddhist deities. In this way, the museum combines an overview of history with concrete examples of art and written records. Museum visits and tours must be arranged in advance.

Archaeological Traces in the District

The history of the Ivolginsky District also reaches back to much earlier times. The Xiongnu settlement is more than 2,000 years old. In addition, Paleolithic and Neolithic Stone Age settlement sites and slab burials have been documented in the district. These archaeological findings form a distinct topic alongside the Buddhist culture of the Datsan: they turn attention to early settlements and burial practices rather than focusing exclusively on sacred architecture.

Planning Your Visit and Finding a Vacation Rental

If you want to visit the palace of Khambo Lama Itigelov, you will need a separate pilgrim ticket. It is not included in the price of the general tour and must be purchased at the Sogchen-Dugan. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between the museum, the general tour and a visit to the palace; museum visits and tours must be arranged in advance.

Tourist access to the Ivolginsky Datsan is listed as route 161 from the Central Market in Ulan-Ude. Check the route information before setting out, as it may change. Your travel interests can guide your choice of vacation rental: consider the Ivolginsky District as a search destination if you want to focus on Buddhist architecture, the Datsan museum or archaeological history. First consider which of these topics will shape your trip, then compare specific accommodation locations with your planned visits.
