Novozybkov combines a distinctive wooden building heritage with a local history museum whose subjects range from the city’s past to natural history. In the city center, carved details on houses and preserved wooden churches catch the eye; in the museum, historical objects sit alongside rocks, fossils, and bones of extinct animals. The city thus offers different ways to explore, from architecture in the streetscape to collections on the history and nature of the region.

Wooden Architecture in the Streetscape

Many houses in Novozybkov are distinguished by carved wooden window frames and other wooden ornamentation. On a stroll through the center, you can discover examples of local wooden architecture with richly pierced carvings. Look out for window frames, carved work, and other decorations: wooden design is a recurring feature of the cityscape on many houses.

One striking individual building is the house of merchant B. I. Pevzner, built in the early 20th century. It borders Novozybkov’s central square and is considered a city landmark. Unlike the carvings found across many houses, it is a single, distinctive focal point on the square.

Three wooden churches have been preserved in Novozybkov: Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy khram, Nikolskiy (Nikolsko-Rozhdestvenskiy) khram, and khram Rozhdestva Bogoroditsy. Together with the carved houses and the merchant’s house, they showcase different aspects of local wooden architecture.

City and Natural History at the Local History Museum

Collections of original objects have been brought together in two halls of the section “Istoricheskoye proshloye Novozybkovskogo kraya s drevneyshikh vremen do nachala XX veka.” The historical period covered spans from the earliest times to the beginning of the 20th century. One hall also depicts a street in 19th-century Novozybkov. Thus, this section brings collection objects together with a specific city scene.

The natural history department of the Novozybkov Local History Museum also comprises two halls: “Geologicheskoye proshloye i evolyutsiya organicheskogo mira” and “Priroda nashego kraya.” The first hall displays rocks of various ages, minerals, fossils, and bones of extinct animals. Geological and paleontological specimens form a distinct focus there; the second hall’s title presents the region’s nature as its subject.

The museum’s own building history is also connected to a Novozybkov manor house: in 1953, the museum moved into an ornately decorated house that had previously belonged to M. Volkov, one of Novozybkov’s largest match manufacturers in the 19th century.
