Navlya tells its story in specific places: at the Museum of Partisan Glory, at monuments in the town centre, and in squares that commemorate underground fighters. This gives your trip a clear focus on remembrance. The museum also offers a surprising musical note.

Museum: Partisan History and a Singer

The exhibition at the Museum of Partisan Glory is devoted primarily to the actions of partisans and underground fighters from Navlya during the Great Patriotic War. A dedicated section is devoted to Anastasia Vyaltseva (1871–1913). Recordings of her voice add an audible dimension to this insight into the singer’s life.

Two very different subjects therefore meet in the same museum: the history of resistance in Navlya and the memory of a singer. If you are interested in both, it is worth bearing these contrasts in mind when planning how much time to spend at the museum.

Memorial Sites in Central Navlya and Beyond

An obelisk to the liberators and partisans was erected in central Navlya on 17 September 1968. Memorial plaques were added in 1971. One of them names 14 partisan units formed in the district between 1941 and 1943. The information thus links a monument in the town with the history of the entire district.

P. I. Derevyanko Square in the centre was named in 2008. Two years later, a memorial wall bearing the names of the 14 partisan units of the “Death to the German Occupiers!” brigade and a bust of the brigade commander, Pyotr Ilyich Derevyanko, were installed there. Pyotr Derevyanko Square of Military and Partisan Glory is also one of Navlya’s sights.

Another monument commemorates the tank crews of the 10th Independent Guards Tank Brigade of the 1st Tank Corps of the 11th Guards Tank Army of the Bryansk Front. The unit took part in the liberation of the district centre. The monument was erected in May 1985: a heavy IS-2 tank stands on a pedestal.

The Square of the Komsomol Underground Fighters is also one of Navlya’s sights. The different sites each highlight history in their own way: an obelisk, a memorial wall, a bust, and a tank monument.

A Themed Tourist Route and a Natural Monument Nearby

The tourist route “Around the Partisan Oak,” developed in 2013, includes the Square of the Komsomol Underground Fighters and the Museum of Partisan Glory in Navlya within Navlinsky District. The route concept thus connects two places that each offer their own way to explore the history of the district and the town.

The “Partisan Oak” natural monument is located near the village of Glinnoye and is of both federal and regional importance. It is a distinct natural attraction in the wider area of the destination, while the memorial sites and museum are in Navlya. This distinction helps you keep local sightseeing interests and nature-related themes separate when planning your trip.

More to Explore in Bryansk Oblast

Beyond Navlya, Bryansk Oblast offers a range of cultural, historical, and landscape-related attractions. The “Khatsun” Memorial Complex commemorates the victims of the Nazi occupation regime in the Bryansk region and the Russian villages destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. Ovstug was the Tyutchevs’ family estate and also the birthplace of Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev. The Ovstug Museum Estate is situated on the banks of the Ovstuzhenka.

Another highlight is the Dyatkovo Crystal Museum in Dyatkovo. Its exhibition covers more than two hundred years of glassmaking history. On display are works in coloured and colourless crystal, made using rare processing techniques, as well as artistic compositions by Soviet glassmakers. Vases and decorative furnishings from the 19th and 20th centuries stand alongside elaborate light fixtures, decorative glass ensembles, and gifts and souvenirs for well-known figures.

For nature lovers, the “Bryansky Les” Nature Reserve in Bryansk Oblast offers a different experience: visitors can discover the wilderness through environmental education, routes, and observation. The area lies between the Desna and Nerussa rivers and is the region’s only nature reserve. It is also one of the centres for the breeding and reintroduction of bison, which were historically native to this area.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Navlya, consider whether you want to focus mainly on the local memorial sites and museum. Other cultural and nature-related attractions belong to Bryansk Oblast and can be considered as separate destinations when choosing where to stay.
