Discover Velsk through its cultural venues and historic riverside district. The local history museum covers topics ranging from nature and early history to the painted houses of the Povazhye; the riverside promenade in the historic district offers a different perspective. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Velsk, you can start by considering whether exhibitions, art or walks will play the biggest part in your trip.

Four Exhibition Themes at the Velsk Local History Museum

The Velsk Local History Museum was founded in May 1919, based on a collection of antique objects belonging to local farmer Vasily Feoktistovich Kulakov. Its exhibitions cover four themes. “Nature and Natural Resources of Velsky District” was created in 1989 and redesigned in 2014. The exhibition “History of the Povazhye from Early Times to the Beginning of the 20th Century” dates from 1992 and was redesigned in 2013–2016. It is joined by the exhibition and museum complex “Museum of the Painted Houses of the Povazhye,” established in 2018, and “Velsky District/Urban Okrug 1917–1964: History and Fates,” from 2019. A new exhibition hall also opened that year.

The themes can be grouped by subject and period: nature and natural resources sit alongside early regional history, painted houses, and the history of 1917 to 1964. This gives visitors several ways to explore Velsk, rather than focusing on just one era. Current exhibition arrangements may change, so keep them in mind when planning your visit.

Walks and Places of Remembrance

The riverside promenade lies in the center of Velsk’s historic district and is a pleasant place for a leisurely walk. A monument to the young Lomonosov stands along the promenade. This gives a walk by the water a specific cultural connection: alongside the urban setting itself, the memory of Lomonosov is part of this place.

Another historical connection is the Karpechenko House. On June 19, 2009, a bust of G. D. Karpechenko, created by sculptor P. I. Gil of Saint Petersburg, was unveiled in its courtyard. The second floor of the house is home to the Karpechenko House Center for Scientific, Educational and Cultural Activities. The bust and the center represent different cultural connections at the same house.

Art in Velsk and Regional Perspectives

The Velsk Art Gallery offers another perspective: its team opens new exhibitions each month together with artists. The gallery’s collection includes paintings by Vladimir Grigoriev. While the local history museum covers a range of themes and periods, the gallery focuses on a monthly exhibition program. If you would like to include art in your trip, the two venues offer different ways to decide what to focus on.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide what kind of stay you want: will it focus mainly on museum themes and art, or also on leisurely walks? If people in your travel group have different interests, you can compare these priorities.

The Arkhangelsk Oblast offers another perspective on culture. The cultural and historical ensemble of the Solovetsky Archipelago includes a monastic fortress dating from the 15th to the early 20th century, as well as sacred sites and dozens of settlements dating from the 6th to the 1st millennium BC. The medieval road and irrigation systems of the Solovetsky Islands are harmoniously integrated into the surrounding natural and cultural landscape. These different periods give the region’s cultural heritage a distinctive breadth.

Wooden architecture offers another way to explore the history of Arkhangelsk Oblast. The architectural and landscape exhibition at the Malye Korely Museum includes more than 100 wooden architecture monuments from Arkhangelsk Oblast. The museum is also included in the state register of particularly valuable cultural heritage sites of the peoples of the Russian Federation. The Solovetsky Archipelago and Malye Korely broaden the view of the region, while Velsk’s local cultural venues offer their own distinct points of connection.
