Smolensky District in Altai: Trails and Museums
Accommodation in Smolensky District
Smolensky District is located in Altai Krai. Nature park trails, museums and places along the Peschanaya River offer different travel itineraries to choose from. Do not confuse the district with Russia’s Smolensk Oblast; the destinations covered here are in Altai. Compare the location of a holiday apartment with your chosen destination, and check availability with the individual listing.
Hiking Trails
In the «Предгорье Алтая» Nature Park, near Belokurikha, the 12-kilometre educational walking trail «С видами на гору Синюха» runs along a slope through mixed forest and past several rock formations. The easy, 1.8-kilometre «Старая мельница» walking trail is a different route; its name refers to the remains of a dam on the Belokurikha River. The two trails differ considerably in length and difficulty. Check their current condition before setting out.
History, River and Dates
The village of Новотырышкино has museums dedicated to the lives of Siberian peasants and German settlers. The Smolensk Local History Museum presents the district’s history. The «Сибирская масленица» festival has been held in Новотырышкино since 2007; an equestrian competition is part of the programme. The regional «Песчаная» festival in Солоновка also includes sports competitions. Recurring festivals are not activities available every day; check the dates for the relevant year.
The Peschanaya has a stretch of rapids about 20 kilometres long. Its difficulty increases during high water; the stated grades range from 3 to 4 under normal conditions and from 4 to 5 during high water. This is not general advice for swimming or for beginners. If you plan to stay by the river, check the conditions and the experience required separately.
