Get to know Basargino through two distinct themes: the history of St. Nicholas Church and a mountain-surrounded landscape at the “Basargino” Educational and Health Center. Together, they offer culture enthusiasts and nature lovers concrete points of reference for planning a trip.

A church with an older icon collection

St. Nicholas Church in Basargino preserves locally venerated icons from the second half of the 19th century. These include “The Crucifixion with the Onlookers,” “The Resurrection of Christ” and “Ruler of All,” as well as icons of St. Nicholas and the martyrs Kirik and Julitta. Another image depicts four feasts of Christ: the Nativity, Transfiguration, Ascension and Exaltation of the Cross. The subjects therefore range from central scenes of the Christian faith to saints and feast days.

The church building dates from a considerably later period: it was built in 2012 with the blessing of Bishop Maxim (Dmitriev), Bishop of Barnaul and Altai, and consecrated on December 14, 2013. The collection and the church building thus represent different periods: the icons date from the 19th century, while the church was consecrated in 2013.

Mountain scenery and nature experiences

The “Basargino” Educational and Health Center is set in a landscape surrounded by mountains. A 2018 travel report recommends a short climb up Mount Ipatievskaya, where a cross stands. If you are considering this climb, check current access and trail conditions beforehand, as the recommendation dates from 2018.

The Basargino maral farm offers the opportunity to observe marals. If this nature experience is a deciding factor in your trip, check in advance whether visits are currently possible.

According to the stated distance, Lake Aya is about 40 km from the “Basargino” Educational and Health Center. It should therefore be considered a separate destination when planning your trip, rather than an activity right at the center. This distinction helps separate local attractions from potential destinations in the surrounding area.

Other highlights in Altai Krai

Further afield in Altai Krai, other places offer additional nature and cultural attractions. In Belokurikha, forest health trails invite visitors to take walks, while more challenging routes lead to Lonely Pine, Four Brothers Rock and Shishi Creek. A chairlift takes visitors to the summit of Mount Tserkovka. Belokurikha therefore offers walking trails, more challenging routes and a lift ride as distinct options. Check the chairlift’s operating status before planning a ride.

Another cultural highlight in Altai Krai is in Srostki: the Vasily Shukshin Museum opened in 1978 and is housed in the former wooden school building that Shukshin attended and where he taught briefly. The museum houses thousands of exhibits. Unlike the icon collection at St. Nicholas Church, this site connects cultural history with Shukshin’s school years and his brief period of teaching. Basargino, Belokurikha and Srostki thus offer different experiences to weigh when choosing destinations in Altai Krai.
