Culture

The church “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena” was built between 2010 and 2016 in the classical Moldavian, Ștefanian style. On 19 May 2023, an icon of the Virgin Mary from the Metropolitan Cathedral of Cluj-Napoca was displayed there for veneration.

In the center of the commune is the church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” of the Straja I parish. The church was built between 1867 and 1870 and consecrated for the first time in October 1877. The surroundings of Straja Commune are also home to the “Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Gheorghe Laura” church, the “Biserica Penticostală Plai Vicovu de Sus” church, the “Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Andrei Bivolâria” church, and the “Biserica Ortodoxă Centru Vicovu de Sus” church.

Casa Muzeu – Straja was donated to the Adormirea Maicii Domnului parish in Straja in 2019 and moved that same year to the vicinity of the church, onto the parish grounds. Its collection includes numerous old household objects collected in the village, as well as old letters and postcards from the front, prisons, and concentration camps, along with medals and awards from the two World Wars.

The Muzeul Satului Bucovinean in Suceava displays a Gospodărie Straja originating from Straja as an example of vernacular architecture. The interior and exterior walls of the church at Sucevița Monastery are completely decorated with 16th-century murals.

History

The “Străjăncuța” folklore ensemble was founded in Straja in 1974 and has preserved authentic songs, dances, Christmas carols, and customs across five generations.

Events

The “Mândră-i Straja-n sărbătoare” event reached its seventh edition in 2023. The 2023 edition began with religious ceremonies and continued with events focused on culture, education, and recognition. The “MÂNDRA-I STRAJA-N SĂRBĂTOARE!” event is scheduled to take place in Straja Commune in September 2026.

The Suceava River crosses Straja from east to west; at the same time, Straja is part of the Obcinele Bucovinei. Forests cover a large part of the area of Straja Commune.

The trail to Vârful Scorbura begins in Straja on the road leading to the former CFR station. After leaving the road to the former station, the trail climbs through the forest. On the route from Straja, Vârful Scorbura is marked at an elevation of 980 m.
