Comuna Șotrile consists predominantly of sub-Carpathian hills; in the north, a lower mountain level emerges in the Baiului Mountains. In this stepped hilly and mountainous landscape, Cucuiatu reaches an elevation of 826 m. Vârful Frumos reaches 1,447 m on the municipality’s highest mountain level.

Landscape

The Doftana Gorges, also called the Brebul Gorges, lie above Lunca Mare and extend up to Vârful Cucuiatu. Below the Paltinu Dam, the Doftana Valley has a pronounced floodplain, particularly from Lunca Mare downstream to its confluence with the Prahova. The Câmpinița River is formed by the Serbuloaia and Boncu streams and flows through the western part of Șotrile.

Culture and History

The Sfântul-Nicolae Church in Șotrile was built between 1882 and 1884 by Prince Dimitrie Barbu Știrbei together with the residents who worked on his estate. Its current paintings were executed by Dimitrie Hornu in 1937 in the Byzantine style using matte oil paint. A primary school was temporarily housed in the church’s bell tower. In Lunca Mare, construction of the Sfântul-Pantelimon Church began in 1908 and was completed in 1909.

The historic buildings in Șotrile include the Steliana Cheluș House from the late 19th or early 20th century, the Elena Dan House from 1900, the Ion I. Dăscăleciu House from 1910, the Silvia Bârsan House from 1920, the Dan Gh. Ion House from the mid-19th century, and the Ana Stănică House from 1907.

Routes and Connections

The Muscel–Voila–Șotrile route reaches Șotrile after approximately 5 km through the Voila Forest. Before entering the municipality of Șotrile, this route offers the possibility of taking a short walk to Vârful Cucuiatu. The moderately difficult circular route to Vârful Cucuiatul is 18 km long and takes 2.5 hours to walk.

County road DJ207 connects Câmpina with Vistieru via Șotrile; the route is listed as being 19 km long.

Traditions and Local Life

Historically, livelihoods in Șotrile included gathering wild fruits and mushrooms. Beekeeping was an important traditional occupation there.

In Lunca Mare, in the Doftana River valley, there is a trout farm dating from 1960 with six earthen ponds.
