Brâncovenești Commune: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Roman fort of Brâncovenești was located on Dacia’s eastern Roman limes, on a terrace above the Mureș, and controlled the route from the province into the eastern Barbaricum. Kemény Castle has a square layout with an inner courtyard and corner towers, two of which are larger and two smaller. The Laleaua Pestriță nature reserve is a botanical protected area established to protect the rare snake’s-head fritillary Fritillaria meleagris; it lies south of Vălenii de Mureş within the municipality of Brâncovenești.

History and Architectural Heritage

The present-day Reformed church was built by the Kemény family in 1727 and is considered by art historians to be one of the most exemplary buildings in the Rococo style of Transylvanian ecclesiastical architecture. The towerless Reformed church is located near the fortified castle.

The archaeological site of Săcalu de Pădure also points to the area’s earlier history: a Dacian coin made of silver-plated copper was found there.

Nature

Idicel Pădure lies at the foot of the Călimani Mountains in a submontane landscape. The Valea Idicelului is a tributary of the Mureș. The mountain Dealul Gropşoara lies in the wider regional surroundings of Brâncoveneşti Commune. The hill Dealul Neagra is also located in this wider regional area.

Culture

A musical tradition passed down through the generations leads to Idicel Pădure: Rafila Moldovan first performed in 1963, at the age of 24, at the cultural centre of Idicel Pădure. She sang doine, ballads and pricesne that she had heard and collected from older villagers.

Getting Around

The castle tour through the upper Mureș Valley includes Kemény Castle in Brâncovenești. It is approximately 70 kilometres long and can be completed by train and bicycle or by car in a single day. On this castle tour, Brâncovenești station was the starting point for the first visit to Kemény Castle.

Kemény Castle was open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Mondays.
