Culture and Crafts

The wooden church from Oncești is one of the oldest wooden churches in Maramureș. Its wooden structure, interlocked on two levels, combines meticulous woodwork with an unusual spatial effect. Also preserved are an imperial door, a deacon’s door and very small windows. In 1974, the church was moved to the Muzeul Satului Maramureșean in Sighetu Marmației, where it was restored in 1975.

Traditional clothing is also part of the cultural side of Oncești. Folk craftswoman Maria Godja from Oncești makes garments worn by the Moroșeni. Her work includes Cojoace, Chităre, Cămeși, Trăistuțe and Brâie. The different names represent a variety of craftsmanship expressed through specific items of clothing, not merely through folkloric motifs.

Museums and Places of Remembrance

Several institutions and historical sites can be found in the vicinity of Oncești. These include the Memorialul Victimelor Comunismului si a Rezistentei Sighetu Marmaţiei, classified as a museum. The Muzeul de Stiintele Naturn Sighetu Marmaţiei is also classified as a museum.

This series is complemented by the Casa Memorială Doctor Joan Mihalyi de Apsa Sighetu Marmaţier, classified as a historical site. Also classified as a monument is the Bustul Eroului Revolutiei de la Una Mie Opt Sute Patruzeci şi Opt lon Buteanu Sighetu Marmaţiei.

Landscape

The immediate surroundings of Oncești include the Vârful Sefirul peak and the Vârful Osului peak. Further afield are the Vârful Vălenilor mountain and the Vârful Dumbrăviţei mountain.

For landscape-related activities, checking current route conditions is part of the usual travel preparation. Such information can be checked before setting out, while the named peaks and mountains form the geographical framework for planning excursions.

Cetatea Oncești and Route

The “Maramureșul Istoric: Cetatea Oncești” route begins in Oncești and leads to Cetatea Oncești. The site contains both Dacian and medieval remains. Visible features include the remains of a medieval tower with a square ground plan and a sandstone wall. The extraction of the sandstone created a grotto.

The Oncești route can be reached by bus, by an intercity minibus from Baia Mare in the direction of Valea Izei–Bârsana–Borșa, or by car. A Borcut spring is located approximately 30 minutes from the starting point of the Oncești route. When travelling by public transport, current timetables should be checked before departure; for the route itself, the starting point, destination and historical remains remain the defining reference points.

Festival Day

The “jocu' satului” takes place in Oncești every year on the second day of Easter. For events scheduled annually, it is advisable to check the current event date before travelling.
