Discover Slobozia: Monastic History, Nature and Festivals

In Slobozia, Mănăstirea Slobozia preserves a founding history dating back to 1634. The present-day church of this monastery was completely rebuilt in 1842. Mănăstirea Slobozia also has an iconostasis dating from the first half of the 19th century. It contains a cross from the older iconostasis dating from the 17th century. The building history and furnishings thus bring together evidence from several centuries, without the individual periods of origin overlapping.

Culture and History

The archaeological site Municipiul Slobozia is included on the list of historic monuments. It comprises a Neolithic settlement of the 5th millennium BC belonging to the Boian culture, as well as medieval settlements from the 9th to 11th centuries and from the 17th to 18th centuries. This means that the site documents both the early settlement of the Boian culture and two clearly separate medieval periods.

In the Bora district of Slobozia, the Biserica „Adormirea Maicii Domnului“ is included on the list of historic monuments. The church dates from 1864. The wooden church „Sf. Nicolae“ in Slobozia, dating from 1748, is also a protected historic monument. The two churches therefore represent different building periods within the urban area: the wooden church dates back to the 18th century, while the church in Bora dates from the 19th century.

The Monumentul Eroilor in Slobozia was inaugurated in 1932. Romanian and foreign soldiers who died in the First World War are buried there. The Muzeul Național al Agriculturii claims a unique position in Romania because of its profile. The permanent exhibition of the Muzeul Județean Ialomița is entitled „Omul și râul. Evoluția comunităților umane în Bazinul Ialomiței“. The two museums focus on different areas: one is defined by its agricultural profile, while the other is dedicated to the relationship between people and the river in the Ialomița Basin.

Nature

Parcul Tineretului in Slobozia covers 17.3 hectares. The Coridorul Ialomiței national-interest protected area has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2017. It extends across the area of Slobozia and covers 26,727 hectares. Pădurea Peri is a recreational area in Slobozia. It includes barbecue areas and a section for various festival and competition events. Thus, within the urban area, a clearly defined park, a large protected area and a recreational area with an event space are located alongside one another.

Parcul de vacanță Hermes is located 2 km from Slobozia. The park includes horse and pony stables as well as a miniature replica of the Eiffel Tower. Its stated features therefore range from the stables to an architectural miniature.

Events

In 2026, the FREELAND Festival reached its fifth chapter at Pădurea Peri. It brought together music, community and nature. This edition thus ties in with the event area at Pădurea Peri while also placing the festival in a specific time frame.

The „Ionel Perlea“ Festival and Competition took place in several editions in Slobozia. These included a national singing and conducting competition in 2019. The 2025 edition was international and included a singing competition. The two editions mentioned thus demonstrate both the time interval between them and the different scope of the events.
