Țăndărei: Monuments, Ialomița Meanders and Lake Strachina
Culture
In Țăndărei stands the Sfinții Voievozi Church, a historic architectural monument and the oldest building in Țăndărei. It has been restored, conserved and appropriately refurbished so that it can once again serve the local community. Historic age and renewed condition come together in this place of worship.
At Țăndărei-La cimitir, the Dridu settlement is registered as a historic monument under LMI code IL-I-s-B-14067. At No. 2 Strada Florilor in Țăndărei, Ialomița County, is the Moara Țărănească; it is a Group B historic monument registered under IL-II-m-B-14163. The Spiru Haret-type school dates from 1905 and is listed as a historic monument under registration IL-II-m-B-14165. The historic evidence thus ranges from a settlement and a mill to a school building alongside the oldest place of worship.
Nature
Țăndărei lies on the left bank of the Ialomița in a landscape where the river forms numerous meanders. Lake Strachina, a fluvial liman, lies near Țăndărei. It extends approximately 10 km northwards to the commune of Valea Ciorii. Riverbanks, meanders and the lake’s elongated shape give the landscape clearly defined geographical contours.
Lake Strachina is a nature reserve established to protect avifauna in the administrative areas of the town of Țăndărei and the commune of Valea Ciorii. The protected area was designated by Government Decision No. 2151 of 2004 and overlaps with the Lacul Strachina Natura 2000 site, an SPA. The protected area therefore covers the administrative areas of both local authorities and is also connected with the Lacul Strachina Natura 2000 site.
Forests in the vicinity of Țăndărei also provide recreational spaces and opportunities for leisure activities. In addition to the river and lake environment, wooded areas are therefore part of the regional landscape.
Leisure and Local Life
The cultural centre in Țăndărei provides space for art exhibitions, theatre performances and community events. Several designated fishing spots also offer tourists opportunities for recreational fishing.
The local offering also includes the Țăndărei agro-food market. It sells vegetables, fruit, eggs, fish and dairy products.
Event dates and start times should be checked before travelling if art exhibitions, theatre performances or community events are to shape the day’s itinerary. Cultural centre opening hours may change and are therefore relevant when preparing for the trip. Market opening hours can likewise be checked in advance if shopping is planned.
