Culture and History

Mugeni’s history is visibly preserved in the Reformed Church. The church was probably built in the 13th or 14th century and is likely regarded as the most important medieval church of the Odorhei Seat. The interior contains wall paintings with fragments from the legends of Saint Ladislaus and Saint Margaret, as well as a depiction of the Last Judgement. Church visits depend on the respective opening hours; current times should be checked before departure if the wall paintings are the main focus.

The exhibition of Szekler folk costume in Mugeni displays garments from several centuries of Szekler folk costume, as well as handmade textiles and lace. The Muzeul Municipal Haaz Rezso Odorheiu Secuiesc, a museum, is located near Mugeni. The Monumentul Eroilor and the Statuia lui Orban Balazs are also nearby; both are monuments. The Mânăstirea Romano-Catolică Odorheiu Secuiesc is a monastery near Mugeni. The Tatar Spring between Mugeni and Dârju has its own historical tradition: it is associated with a local legend about defeated Tatars who wanted to block the spring, and the spring still exists today. Landscape and Nature

Mugeni also encompasses the ROSCI0383 Râul Târnava Mare între Odorheiu Secuiesc și Vânători Natura 2000 area in Harghita County. Along the riverbank in Mugeni, yellow-bellied toads (Bombina variegata) can be seen and their characteristic “unk-unk” call can be heard. Amphibian observations are not tied to fixed event times; current weather and path conditions should be checked before departure.

Several named peaks lie around Mugeni. Vârful Bonte is a peak in the immediate vicinity of Mugeni, as is Vârful Spre Cetate. Vârful Spatele Pietrei and Vârful Stejarului are peaks in the area around Mugeni.

A 17.2-kilometre tour leads from Poarta cu Comori (“Kincses Porta”) in Mugeni to Dârjiu.
