Rojiște: Churches, Archaeology and the Jiu Landscape

Culture and History

The church “Sfântul Nicolae” is located in the village of Rojiște and is listed as an architectural monument dating from 1780. The church building is therefore one of the town’s specifically dated historical points of reference.

Around 600 metres south of the exit from Rojiște lies the archaeological site “Situl arheologic de la Rojişte - Oaga Vijoii”. It is located on the right-hand side of the Craiova–Bechet road (DN55), on the upper terrace of the Jiu floodplain. The historical connection thus extends from the village into the floodplain landscape south of the town exit. For historic churches and archaeological sites, current opening hours can be checked before travelling.

The church “Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” stands in the village of Tîmburești in the municipality of Rojiște. It is an architectural monument from the early 19th century. The two churches are located in two villages of the same municipality; their dates span the period from 1780 to the early 19th century.
