Chilieni: Church Art, Manor House and Oltul Superior

The restored Unitarian Church of Chilieni features wall paintings in the nave. They depict scenes from the Passion of Christ, the Last Judgment, and the legend and history of Saint Ladislaus. The pictorial themes combine religious scenes with the tradition surrounding a historical figure. The Reformed Church of Chilieni was built in 1615. A later reconstruction is associated with the year 1728. Thus, the two churches preserve different construction periods and forms of ecclesiastical history. The restored Unitarian Church is located a few hundred metres from the edge of Sfântu Gheorghe, in the direction of Brașov.

History and Architectural Heritage

From the 17th to the 19th century, the Székely-Pótsa Manor House served as the residence of the Székely family. The Székely family is regarded as local lesser nobility. At the end of the 19th century, the manor house passed through marriage into the possession of the Potsa family, who were related to the Székely family. Also at the end of the 19th century, the building acquired its present form. This comprises eight rooms. The building also includes an entrance hall. A monumental staircase is likewise part of its present form. The history of the house can thus be traced across several centuries and through two interconnected families. The manor house's present appearance belongs to a later phase in the building's development, while its use as a residence dates back further.

Oltul Superior Natural Area

The Oltul Superior Natura 2000 site bears the designation ROSCI0329. For the most part, the protected area overlaps with the Olt floodplain. In the area of Chilieni and Ilieni, it continues after being interrupted at Sfântu Gheorghe. The Olt floodplain forms the landscape area of the protected site. For geographical classification, therefore, both the name of the protected area and its relationship to the river floodplain and its course between the places mentioned are significant.

Peaks in the Surrounding Area

Pusna Mare and Mosighet are peaks in the vicinity of Chilieni. Pilisca and Bodos are also located in this area and are peaks. The four names extend the view beyond the village to the surrounding landscape: Pusna Mare, Mosighet, Pilisca and Bodos each belong to the area around Chilieni.

As part of a municipal project, a cycling route on the Olt embankment in the Chilieni area was extended. The route is seven kilometres long. It was paved. Its specified length and paved surface describe the route as an independent infrastructure project on the Olt embankment; both characteristics are part of the documented scope of the project.
