Râșca: Mountains, Churches and Hiking Trails

Râșca is located on the northern side of the Apuseni Mountains, more precisely in the Gilău Mountains, between the Someșul Cald and the first tributaries of the Crișul Repede.

The commune is characterised by rounded mountain ridges and smooth, partly gently undulating upland areas that contrast with deeply incised valleys and steep slopes. Valea Fericirii refers to a section of the valley that runs through Râșca Commune and extends for around 40 km in the northern part of the commune.

Culture

Mănăstirea Râșca Transilvană Monastery is located at an altitude of around 1,200 metres in the Apuseni Mountains, near the Beliș-Fântânele Dam. It lies within the administrative territories of the communes of Râșca and Călățele, near Lake Fântânele-Beliș.

The monastery's monumental church was built between 2003 and 2018, follows classical forms of the Moldavian style and features Neo-Byzantine frescoes created using the fresco technique.

Râșca is one of the stops along the wooden churches route in Cluj County.

The school in Râșca de Sus was converted into a museum protected as national cultural heritage. The museum is housed in a traditional wooden building around 100 years old, with carved beams; wooden benches, drawings on the walls, schoolbooks and notebooks have been preserved there.

The wooden church in Cristești already existed in 1862, was moved to the hill because of the sharply rising water level and brought to the village in 1974. Râșca is associated with authentic local traditional costume and folklore traditions.

The churches Biserica Ortodoxă Luna de Sus, Biserica Reformată Luna de Sus, Biserica Nădăşelu and Biserica Finişel are located in the wider regional surroundings of Râșca.

Landscape

Muncelul is a mountain in the immediate vicinity of Râșca. The mountains Dâmbul Furnicarului, Dealul Crucii and Ureasa are located in the wider regional surroundings of Râșca.

The rocky, difficult-to-access site of Șoimul in a forest served as a hiding place for young men who refused to go to war.

Hiking

The Fântânele–Gorge Entrance loop trail is marked with a red dot, takes four hours and is classified as easy. The Fântânele–Iancului Cross trail is marked with a blue dot, takes two hours and is classified as easy.

A circular hiking trail in Râșca Commune is around 12.5 km long and classified as easy. It runs mostly through the territory of Râșca Commune, passes through a section of the Someșul Cald Gorge and then climbs towards Dealul Mare in Râșca.

The circular hiking trail follows the ridge of Dealul Pietrelor and includes six consecutive viewpoints.

There are opportunities for hiking in the area around Stațiunea Fântânele. In Râșca Commune, hikes are possible on marked trails.

Other Activities

Stațiunea Fântânele has a ski slope and opportunities for water sports on the lake, with boats or pedal boats.

In Garda in Râșca, there is a currently inactive quartz mine where work was carried out for more than 20 years.

Traditional activities in Râșca Commune include agriculture, livestock farming, woodworking and agrotourism.
