Gârbău between Roman traces and churches

Gârbău lies in the southwest of the Dealurile Clujului on the Nadăș River. The commune combines a riverside location with the rolling landscape of this region. Medieval, Roman and modern traces come together in the village and its surroundings.

History and culture

Gârbău's historical and tourist attractions include Conacul Laszay, dating from 1791. The manor house represents the more recent history of the village and is a key landmark among the commune's historic buildings.

On a hill, a fragment of an old baptistery dating from the 15th century marks the site where a Hungarian church stood in the Middle Ages. The surviving part thus refers both to the medieval church and to the religious history of the village. Remains of an advanced observation post were found on Dealul Boboara. It is believed to have belonged to the Roman fort at Gilău, which was subordinate to the city of Napoca. The hill in Gârbău is thus connected with the Roman sites of Gilău and Napoca.

There are also archaeological traces in the village center: Roman ruins with inscriptions were found in the gardens of two residents. Wall remains and written evidence are found together here in a rural setting.

The wooden church in Gârbău dates from the 19th century and is no longer used for services. Conacul Leszay is listed as a historic monument. The history of ownership also includes Lészay István: in 1718, he received Gârbăul Unguresc together with three other villages from the Jesuits of Cluj as part of a mortgage arrangement. The wooden church, manor house and transfer of ownership thus represent different periods in the village's history.

Railway line through Gârbău

Gârbău has a railway station on the Cluj-Napoca–Oradea line. The route passes through Mera, Huedin, Ciucea, Negreni, Bratca, Șuncuiuș, Peștera and Vadu Crișului. Cluj-Napoca and Oradea are the two endpoints of the aforementioned line, while the other places mark its course between these cities. The intermediate stations are arranged along the connection between the two cities, while Gârbău itself has its own station on this line.

The Biserica Nădăşelu church is located in the immediate vicinity of Gârbău.
