Homorog: Church Art, Icon Museum and Nature

Culture and History

Homorog is home to the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God, built in 1836–1837. The sacred building is known for its wall paintings by the painter Ioan Lopoșan and is considered an important historical monument.

Almost everywhere, the church’s old interior furnishings have been preserved in their original form. The preserved furnishings extend from the altar to the entrance to the high tower and therefore also include the area leading to the high tower.

The combination of the construction period, wall paintings and preserved furnishings makes the church a place where several historical features directly relate to one another. The artistic work of Ioan Lopoșan is just as much part of the traditional appearance as the furnishings in the interior. The view extends from the altar to the entrance leading to the high tower.

The historic townscape also includes the Homorog Heroes’ Monument. It was erected in 1996 from white and black marble; its artistic design was created by the sculptor Cornel Durgheu.

Homorog is therefore home to different forms of remembrance: the Orthodox church with its older construction and furnishing history, and the marble monument created in 1996. Both elements are associated with specific names, dates and artistic works.

Icon Museum

The Homorog Icon Museum was established after more than 200 objects had been collected between 1970 and 1973. The collection therefore has a clearly documented origin in this period of collecting.

The museum collection was opened to visitors in 1973. Its public accessibility is therefore associated with the year 1973, as is the museum building housing the collection.

The museum building was completed in the summer of 1973 and consists of three rooms and an open corridor. The layout therefore includes both enclosed museum rooms and an unenclosed part of the building.

The museum’s chronology can therefore be clearly traced: between 1970 and 1973, the collection grew to more than 200 objects; in 1973, it was opened to visitors; and in the summer of the same year, the building was completed. Three rooms and the open corridor define the architectural setting of this collection.

Nature and Water

In the wider regional surroundings of Homorog, the Rădvani bird colony is located on the border with the municipality of Mădăraș. The area covers 3 ha, is designated as a zoological nature reserve and belongs to Cefa Nature Park.

The bird colony combines a clearly stated area size with its protected status and membership in Cefa Nature Park. Its location on the border with the municipality of Mădăraș describes the wider regional surroundings of Homorog, not the village centre itself.

The Corhana River forms an 8 km stretch for recreational fishing between Homorog and the Hungarian border. The river section described for this use is therefore located between the village and the Hungarian border.

Homorog Recreational Lake is also one of the tourist destinations in the surroundings of Salonta. Its classification refers to the surroundings of the city of Salonta and explicitly identifies it as a recreational lake.

The Corhana section and the recreational lake represent two different water-related attractions in the surroundings of Homorog: an eight-kilometre river section for recreational fishing and a lake that is listed as a recreational lake among the tourist destinations in the surroundings of Salonta.

Tourist Information

The Centre for Tourist Information and Promotion began operating in Homorog in 2015. The centre operated daily and complements the named cultural, natural and water attractions with a tourist information office.

The centre is therefore identified as a separate tourist information office for Homorog and is clearly assigned to the year 2015. Its daily operation adds another specific element of the tourist infrastructure to the information about the church, museum, nature reserve and water attractions.
