Castro Daire between Montemuro, Paiva and Culture

Castro Daire combines the landscape of the Serra do Montemuro with the Rio Paiva river basin and a remarkable cultural history. The Serra do Montemuro also extends across Castro Daire and lies between the Douro to the north and the Rio Paiva to the south. This creates a diverse mix of mountain landscapes, river nature, hiking trails, historic buildings and regional traditions for planning your trip.

Landscape between mountains, rivers and waterfalls

The Serra do Montemuro is part of the Natura 2000 network. Its landscape includes peat bogs and well-preserved stands of Pyrenean oak. The Rio Paiva is also part of the Natura 2000 network. The mountain river is accompanied by lush riparian vegetation, which serves, among other things, as a spawning habitat for trout. The river basin is also home to otters, water voles, Iberian water lizards, Iberian frogs and Lusitanian salamanders, as well as around 14 fish species.

Several different viewpoints and natural sites offer impressive landscape views. The Portas do Montemuro are located at an altitude of around 1,213 metres and offer views of the Serra do Montemuro and the fault-tectonic valley of the Rio Bestança. From Penedo da Saudade, the panoramic view extends across the southern slope of the Serra do Montemuro and the Paiva Valley; the viewpoint can be reached via an iron staircase. The Cascata da Pombeira consists of several waterfalls on the Rio Pombeiro above the Montemuro granite massif. River erosion has created, among other features, potholes there.

Hiking trails and activities on the water

Those wishing to discover Castro Daire on foot will find various routes with clearly distinct profiles. The PR1 Trilho dos Moinhos is a 6.8-kilometre, easily accessible circular hiking trail. The PR2 Percurso das Minas covers 7 kilometres and is also described as an easily accessible circular hiking trail. The Cascata do Ribeiro de Moimenta is located on the PR2 in the parish of Cabril. The Caminho Português Interior de Santiago runs for around 40 kilometres through the municipality of Castro Daire. The section begins at the Ribeira de Cabrum and passes through forested, agricultural and rural areas. Along the way, it passes two chapels dedicated to Saint James and the Natura 2000 area of the Rio Paiva.

For longer outings, the GR52 Grande Rota da Transumância is a good option. It begins at Cruz do Rossão in the Serra do Montemuro and passes through several villages along rural paths, mountain sections, valleys, rivers and streams in the Castro Daire area. Rafting is described as the main river activity on the Rio Paiva; one of the river’s most significant whitewater sections is located here. Praia Fluvial da Folgosa has, among other facilities, a picnic area, a bar with a terrace, an area for hiring pedal boats, as well as opportunities for rowing and fishing competitions. The changing water levels and the gradient of the riverbed also make kayaking, rafting and canyoning possible there.

Culture, history and regional traditions

In Bairro do Castelo, the pelourinho commemorates the history of the town; it dates from the 17th or 18th century. The old settlement wall is attributed to an Iron Age castro, from which the Vila de Castro Daire is said to have emerged. Baroque and Rococo dominate the Igreja Matriz de Castro Daire. The church is classified as an imóvel de interesse público, meaning an object of public interest. Its very ancient origins are linked to the tradition that it was rebuilt during the reign of D. Dinis using stones from the former castle.

The Museu Municipal de Castro Daire is located in Casa da Cerca, an 18th-century Baroque building in the centre of town. The collection includes agricultural implements, archaeology, traditional arts and traditional typography. The Centro de Interpretação e Informação do Montemuro e Paiva has been established in the former Solar dos Mendonças. An interactive application there explores the biodiversity of the Rio Paiva and the relationship between people and this river. A large traditional pisão can still be found today in Fonte Branca in Picão. Vila Pouca is associated with basket weaving.

The annual A Última Rota da Transumância is also dedicated over several days to the pastoral way of life and the tradition of transhumance. FICA Castro Daire, also known as Festa das Colheitas, focuses on local agriculture, including the breeding of Arouquesa cattle and a procession of decorated ox carts through the streets of the Vila de Castro Daire.
