The museum is located in Viseu’s historic centre, in the Paço dos Três Escalões next to the cathedral. On display are 24 works classified as movable cultural heritage of national interest.

The Sé Catedral de Viseu also features a striking architectural detail: inside, the stone-carved vault ribs in the Manueline style form a shape reminiscent of a thick rope with a knot. The Tesouro da Catedral exhibition complements this cultural focus with sculptures, paintings, reliquaries, liturgical vestments, goldsmith’s work and furniture dating from the 12th to the 20th century. The Museu de História da Cidade project presents some of Viseu’s most important icons and is dedicated to exploring 2,500 years of the city’s history.

Monuments, river history and special places

The Cava de Viriato is an octagonal monument covering an area of 32 hectares. Each of its eight earth ramparts is 250 metres long. As a national monument, it is one of Viseu’s notable historic sights and conveys a different impression of the city’s history from the collections in the centre.

Casa da Ribeira evokes the memory of Viseu through former mills on the Paiva River and an olive press that recalls the work of the washerwomen. Its portrayal of life along the river also includes boats on the Ribeira and regional handicrafts. Parque do Fontelo is home to native Portuguese woodland species and a population of peacocks. For getting around the city, there is also the Funicular de Viseu between Rua da Cava do Viriato and Adro da Sé, as well as STUV city buses. The buses have spacious interiors, reserved seats for people with reduced mobility, audible and visual announcements, and lifting platforms for boarding. Viseu’s pedestrian streets generally have stable, even and well-maintained surfaces; there are tactile guidance systems around Praça da República.

Wine region and local specialities

Viseu is located in the centre of the demarcated Dão wine region, which is named after the river that flows through it. The local cuisine and confectionery tradition also give the trip its own character. Viriato is a cake made from flour, sugar, eggs and grated coconut. Its shape is a V and reflects the form of the mythical hero of the city of Viseu. The confectionery tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. Rancho à Moda de Viseu, one of the city’s best-known dishes, is also considered a culinary emblem of the city.

Feira de São Mateus has medieval origins and includes music, folklore, handicrafts, gastronomy and a wide range of entertainment.
