In Vila Nova de Cerveira, the Minho, protected nature and a long local history come together. The Ecovia Caminho do Rio runs for about 13.5 kilometres through the area, bringing you into close contact with the river and the surrounding landscape. If you like to combine nature and culture when choosing a holiday destination, you will find a range of themes here to help plan your trip: riverside paths, historic buildings and insights into fishing on the Minho.

River landscapes and paths along the Minho

The Caminho do Rio is part of the Natura 2000 network and the protected area for waterbirds in the Minho Estuary. The route passes habitats for otters and kingfishers. These natural features give the riverside area special significance; they are also a good reason to pay attention to the landscape and its wildlife on an excursion. Praia Fluvial da Lenta is the starting and finishing point of the Ecopista Caminho do Rio.

Vila Nova de Cerveira also offers points of interest for pilgrims and hikers. The certified Way of St James passes through the historic centre. The Caminho Português da Costa runs for about 14 kilometres through the Vila Nova de Cerveira area. If you are considering a cross-border route, you can explore the hiking trail between Vila Nova de Cerveira and Tomiño, which is included in the APP ECOTUR. For its cross-border hiking trails, the app provides information on difficulty level and duration or distance—a useful basis for planning different tours to suit your preferences.

History in the townscape

Castelo de Cerveira was built around 1320 on the initiative of King D. Dinis, who had it constructed to protect the newly founded settlement. Its oval layout has a perimeter of about 260 metres, and the complex includes eight square towers. Another historic site is Forte de Lovelhe, a trapezoidal bastion fort built between 1660 and 1662. On 13 February 1809, it prevented the troops under Soult’s command from crossing the Minho opposite Vila Nova de Cerveira.

At the Aro Arqueológico de Lovelhe, remains illustrate 2,100 years of history. They include evidence of a Roman villa, a port and extensive storage areas for amphorae. The historic centre is also home to Solar dos Castros, which currently houses the town library. Igreja da Misericórdia was built within the walls in the 17th century. Its raised chapel of Ecce Homo and its painted ceiling featuring the four Evangelists and a pelican as a symbol of charity make it a special point of interest for anyone interested in sacred art.

Museum, traditions and regional cuisine

Aquamuseu do Rio Minho is dedicated to the natural and ethnographic heritage associated with traditional fishing in the Minho basin. A tour simulates the river’s course from source to mouth. At Museu das Pescas, permanent exhibits include old and more recent equipment used for professional and recreational fishing, traditional fishing tools, boat models and black-and-white photographs. This lets you get to know the river landscape through the ways of life and work associated with it.

Local culture is also expressed through art and religious traditions. Bienal Internacional de Arte de Cerveira has been held since 1978, promoting contemporary art, international exchange and cultural decentralisation in Portugal. Roteiro dos Nichos comprises seven Baroque oratories from the 18th century, scattered throughout the historic area. During Holy Week, they are the setting for expressions of religious faith. Debulho de Sável is a typical dish and a showcase of local cuisine. Doce de milho, meanwhile, is a centuries-old recipe associated with Easter.
