Ponte Da Barca showcases historic buildings and local history alongside a landscape shaped by the Lima and the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Around 51 percent of the municipality of Ponte da Barca lies within the national park. You can choose how to spend your time between a stroll through the historic centre, a section of the Ecovia and activities on the water. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first consider whether culture, nature or activity should shape your holiday.

Landscape and Protected Areas

Together with Spain’s Parque Natural da Baixa Limia – Serra do Xurés, the Peneda-Gerês National Park forms the cross-border Gerês-Xurés Park. It was declared a biosphere reserve in 2009. Within the national park, Mata do Cabril in the parish of Lindoso is designated as a fully protected area. This protected landscape is an important part of Ponte Da Barca’s character.

In Lindoso, the walls of Castelo de Lindoso offer views across the Lima Valley and into Spain. Alongside the protected areas, there is also a specific viewpoint to discover: the valley and the view across the border give the landscape a broad perspective.

Architectural History and Museums

A walk through the historic centre of Ponte da Barca begins at the medieval bridge, the former Pombaline market and the pillory. From there, it continues via Capela da Lapa to Igreja da Misericórdia. Ponte sobre o Lima was built in the first half of the 15th century; Igreja Matriz de Ponte da Barca is a 17th-century religious building. The town’s history thus brings together different periods and architectural forms.

The houses and exhibitions also tell stories of different subjects. Centro Interpretativo do Património Fernão de Magalhães is housed in Casa de Maria Lopes da Costa, a building probably dating from the late 14th century. At Museu do Quartzo, an exhibition explores the geology of the municipality of Ponte da Barca. The museum houses Portugal’s largest collection of quartz crystals and also includes an exhibition area dedicated to Marian apparitions. Geology and religion offer distinct perspectives on local culture.

On Foot, by Bike and on the Water

The Ecovia de Ponte da Barca connects the Minho towns of Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca. It is 15 kilometres long and almost entirely flat, and can be travelled by bicycle or on foot. The route follows the banks of the Rio Lima through a landscape shaped by weirs, fish traps, agricultural fields and vines. Its length, terrain and ways of travelling offer practical guidance if you would like to plan an active section of your stay.

The Albufeira de Touvedo in the Peneda-Gerês National Park on the Rio Lima, downstream from Lindoso, offers a different choice of activities. It is suitable for water sports such as canoeing and for sport fishing; local conditions may vary. You can walk or cycle along the banks of the Rio Lima by the reservoir. Access to Ancoradouro de Entre Ambos-os-Rios is via Estrada Nacional N203. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Choose the Right Focus

When looking for a holiday rental in Ponte Da Barca, consider which location best suits your plans. This way, you can choose your base around the experiences that matter to you, rather than trying to fit all the sights into a single trip.
