The museum is dedicated to studying and communicating the region's marine natural heritage.

As an interpretation centre, the Museu Oceanográfico presents the fauna of the Parque Marinho da Arrábida and the wider region. Visitors can explore, observe and interpret underwater life there. The museum includes a saltwater aquarium hall featuring the fauna and flora of the Arrábida marine coast, as well as an exhibition hall with themed exhibitions about the coast, Arrábida and the Sado River. This allows visitors to learn about the natural environment through its communities of organisms and landscape themes, not only by looking at the beach.

History Along the Access Road

Lapa de Santa Margarida is located on the access road to Portinho da Arrábida. Human traces from the Lower Palaeolithic have been found there. Together with the Estação Arqueológica do Creiro and the Forte de Santa Maria da Arrábida, it creates a historical arc extending from early human traces through a bathing area and fish processing to coastal defence. You can therefore shape your stay according to your preferred pace: with nature and the sea as the main theme or with several historic sites as additions.
