Zambujal de Cima: Cave, Bats and Dinosaur Tracks
Accommodation in Zambujal de Cima
Zambujal de Cima is shaped by the Gruta do Zambujal and the geological history of its surroundings. The village is home to an extensive cave system; nearby, you’ll find rural footpaths and the circular trail at Cabo Espichel. 18th-century heritage and a regional site with dinosaur footprints complete the picture.
Cave and Distinctive Natural Formations
The Gruta do Zambujal comprises galleries and passages that form an extensive geological system. Its stalactite and stalagmite formations display rare shapes, including forms resembling butterfly wings and rings. With a large bat colony, wildlife is also a focus alongside geology. The measurements give a sense of its scale: the cave is 108.50 metres long, up to 33 metres high, and follows a main passage. It is designated a site of speleological significance. At the same time, the entrance is blocked by large loose boulders as a result of past quarrying.
Trails between the Countryside and the Cape
The Pinheirinhos area lies in the countryside behind the village and has several footpaths. For a specific, clearly defined walk, another option to consider is the nearby PR2 – Maravilhas do Cabo in the wider Sesimbra area: it starts at Cabo Espichel and is an eight-kilometre circular route of moderate difficulty. Its descent leads towards Baía dos Lagosteiros; a branch trail leads to Pedra da Mua. Pinheirinhos therefore offers several walking options, while the PR2 is a single route with a specified length and difficulty rating. Check local conditions before setting out on a hike.
Heritage and Dinosaur Tracks
Nearby heritage includes the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel and the Ermida da Memória. Both date from the 18th century; their shared period offers a concrete point of reference if you also want to plan your stay around historic buildings. The limestone slabs at Cabo Espichel are rich in fossils and feature dinosaur tracks. Distinct from these is the Pedreira do Avelino site in the Zambujal de Cima region, where 108 dinosaur footprints are spread across five trackways. The Núcleo Interpretativo da Jazida de Icnofósseis da Pedreira do Avelino has a platform for viewing the footprints, as well as information panels about the site and the dinosaurs. Check local conditions before visiting.
Choose a Holiday Rental to Suit Your Travel Plans
The destinations have different geographical locations: the Gruta is in Zambujal de Cima, Pinheirinhos is in the countryside behind the village, the PR2 is in the wider Sesimbra area, and Pedreira do Avelino is in the Zambujal de Cima region. When choosing a holiday rental, this distinction helps you separate the village as your main base from nearby destinations and excursions elsewhere in the wider travel area.
