Discover Envendos: Thermal Waters, Rock Art and the Rota dos Envendos

Envendos combines thermal waters, traces of ancient cultures and a hiking route leading to a viewpoint over the meanders of the Ocreza. This makes the village suitable for planning a trip that combines relaxation, landscapes and history. Depending on whether you prefer quiet hours at the thermal baths, archaeological discoveries or a longer hike, you can give your stay a different focus.

Thermal Waters and Relaxation in Envendos

A special aspect of the village is represented by the Termas da Ladeira de Envendos. There, the thermal water emerges from the rock at 21 °C. The use of the thermal waters has been documented for more than 100 years. Today, the Termas offer therapeutic thermal treatments, wellness services and two- and three-day programmes for wellbeing and relaxation.

The public swimming pools at the headquarters of the Envendos parish are also among the local amenities. They include a bar, a leisure area and a children's playground. This combination complements a stay in which different generations can pursue their own interests without having to limit the trip to just one activity.

Rock Art, Archaeology and Ancient Roads

The area around the Ocreza preserves important traces of earlier cultures. Most of the rock-art depictions along the Ocreza are located in Vale do Souto, Vale da Rovinhosa and the area of the Pracana Dam on the right bank of the Ocreza. These areas belong to the Envendos parish and the municipality of Mação. Archaeological finds in the Ocreza area also include rock engravings at the Ribeira da Ocreza and the depiction of an equid, regarded as the first discovery of Palaeolithic art in the open air in southern Portugal.

Another historical destination is the Ponte Romana da Ladeira de Envendos. It was built between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD as part of an ancient road system connecting Idanha and Ródão. The Foral also recalls that Envendos received a foral from King Manuel I on 18 May 1518. This means that a stay can also be explored through specific historical periods and structures, rather than only through impressions of the landscape.

The Rota dos Envendos and Views of the Ocreza

For active days, the circular Rota dos Envendos is an option. It begins and ends at Praça da República in the centre of Envendos and is approximately 15.7 km long. Take this distance into account when planning your day. The route climbs to Castelo Velho da Zimbreira, from where there is a privileged view of the meanders of the Ocreza. The circular trail therefore combines a clear starting and finishing point with a landscape feature of particular significance.

Pego da Rainha is also among the area's listed experiences. It is home to one of the most important bases of the Escola de Escalada de Mação.
