Valongo combines local history, mining and impressive landscapes with trails through the Serras. Those who want to plan a trip featuring cultural discoveries and physical activity will find various starting points for planning each day. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether museums and historic buildings, geological topics or longer routes should be the main focus.

Culture and History in Valongo

The Museu Municipal de Valongo is a local history museum housed in a building constructed at the beginning of the 19th century. Its collection ranges from baking and breadmaking to slate mining and linen processing, as well as religious art, painting, and tin and wooden toys. The costumes of the Bugios e Mourisqueiros are also among its subjects. In addition, the museum preserves trilobite fossils, prehistoric remains and traces of Roman gold mining.

The Casa do Anjo offers further historical insights. This Baroque-style bourgeois residence with Rococo influences was built in 1766 and housed Valongo’s first hospital, which opened on 15 August 1905. The building is part of the city’s historic axis. The Oficina da Regueifa e do Biscoito in the centre of Valongo is dedicated to the breadmaking tradition as a centuries-old activity in the municipality and collects, preserves and displays related objects and memories.

The remains of slate mining also make the history of the area tangible. The Antigo Guincho is a historic mechanical installation used to lift slate from the bottom of a quarry to the outside. It is believed to date from the 1920s; even then, electric power was used for its operation. The Antiga Chaminé de Ardósia is one of the last surviving remains of the Galinheiro mining complex.

Geology, Gold Mining and Trails

The Parque Paleozóico de Valongo is an open-air laboratory where school and scientific visits take place. Its geological features make the Serras de Valongo a living place for learning about the history of the Earth. At the Centro de Interpretação Ambiental e da Mineração Romana, a Roman workshop with tools illustrates historical methods of gold mining, as well as the construction of roads and aqueducts. The centre also promotes the natural, geological, archaeological and mining heritage of the Serras de Santa Justa e Pias.

For active days, the Centro de Trail de Valongo offers 90 kilometres of routes through the Serras de Santa Justa, Pias and Quintarei. The trails include panoramic, riverside and single-track sections; some have an extremely high difficulty level. The Corredor Ecológico is approximately 9 kilometres long and has a low to moderate difficulty level. This allows you to choose between a shorter route with a moderate rating and more demanding trail sections when planning your trip, without making every day the same.

A special viewpoint is the Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Chãos. From there, you can see the cities of Valongo and Porto; the sea is visible on the horizon. This location complements the geological and historical sights with a sweeping landscape view.
