Santo Tirso combines art, industrial history and green trails to create a diverse destination. Between museums, sculptures, historic monastery buildings and the Rio Ave, you can enjoy very different kinds of holiday days: you can focus on culture, plan a circular hiking trail or explore expansive parkland. This combination offers many starting points for travel planning, especially for families who like to alternate between discovery and activity.

Art and history in Santo Tirso

The MIEC allows visitors to explore the urban area of Santo Tirso independently and freely. The MIECST has a particular focus: 54 sculptures are currently arranged across 6 main areas. Anyone interested in public art can consider these two offerings as different ways of engaging with Santo Tirso’s culture.

The town is also shaped by its monastic history. The Mosteiro de São Bento, also known as Mosteiro de Santo Tirso, preserves a 13th-century Gothic cloister with pointed-arch arcades and artistically decorated capitals. The Museu Municipal Abade Pedrosa is located in the former guesthouse of Mosteiro de Santo Tirso, built between 1737 and 1740. The museum displays archaeological objects from various sites in the region; their chronological range extends from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The redesign, inaugurated in 2016, was designed by architects Álvaro Siza Viera and Eduardo Souto de Moura.

Fábrica de Santo Thyrso was founded in 1896. The Sala da Máquina marks the beginning of a tour through the most representative areas of the Fábrica. The permanent exhibition at the Centro Interpretativo da Fábrica de Santo Thyrso presents the company’s history and its connection to the industrialisation of textiles in the Vale do Ave. This allows you to shape a holiday day specifically around the industrial past and its cultural significance.

The Centro de Arte Alberto Carneiro began its activities with a first exhibition of the permanent collection donated by the sculptor in 2015. The collection donated to the Município de Santo Tirso comprises 50 drawings and 10 sculptures. The Centro de Arte Alberto Carneiro also presents temporary exhibitions and offers educational activities. For visitors who want to combine contemporary art with changing themes, this venue adds another perspective to the historic museums.

Circular trails, parks and the Ave

The PR8 STS is a 10.6-kilometre circular hiking trail starting and ending at Praça 25 de Abril. It runs through Santo Tirso and Burgães and passes through several urban parks and quinta estates in the Concelho Santo Tirso. The designated circular route is therefore suitable as an independent activity, allowing you to incorporate exercise and scenery into your daily plans.

Parque Urbano Sara Moreira is a 96,274 m² public green space. It is located in an oak and cork-oak forest above the Rio Ave and has footpaths, picnic areas, recreational areas, an amphitheatre and a lake. Parque Sara Moreira also has orienteering courses in short, medium and long formats. A cycle path along the Ave connects Parque Urbano Sara Moreira with the town centre of Santo Tirso. Depending on your preferred daily rhythm, you can therefore choose between museum visits, time in the park, a hike and a cycling tour.

Another cultural and historical landmark is Monte Padrão: the archaeological site in Monte Córdova in the Concelho Santo Tirso is classified as a National Monument and lies a few kilometres southeast of the administrative seat of Santo Tirso.

Markets on the second Saturday

Anyone wishing to include local market dates in their trip will find two different offerings on the second Saturday of the month. Bazar D’Artes & Ofícios takes place from 09:00 to 17:00 at Praça Camilo Castelo Branco. Feira de Antiguidades is held on the same day of the week from 09:00 to 16:00 at Parque Dona Maria II. The different times and locations help you structure the day according to your interests without treating arts and crafts and antiques as the same kind of offering.

Which holiday apartment is a suitable base?

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Santo Tirso, your preferred daily schedule should be the deciding factor. If museums, monastery architecture and the markets are your main focus, plan these destinations as cultural highlights. For active days, the PR8 STS, Parque Urbano Sara Moreira or the orienteering courses offer specific themes. When choosing your accommodation, check its location in relation to the activities you actually want to combine. This keeps your decision about a holiday apartment closely aligned with your own holiday pace.
