Frende on the Douro: Archaeology and Traditional Heritage
Accommodation in Frende
Frende combines its location on the Douro with an unusually rich cultural history. On the right bank of the river, strongly hilly terrain and fertile valleys meet archaeological traces, traditional basket weaving and local festival culture. Those planning a trip can combine a range of interests here: historical discoveries, insights into a traditional craft and the landscape of a place rising above the Douro.
Archaeological Traces Around São João
A special starting point for exploring the past is the Tríptico de Frende. It consists of three bas-reliefs from the Roman era. The archaeological site of São João is also part of the local history and is considered a place of transition from paganism to Christianity. On Alto do Castelo stands the small Capela de São João, dedicated to São João and regarded as an archaeological site.
Near the Capela de São João, a fragment of an early Christian tomb-cover slab decorated with a mosaic from the 5th century was found. It is considered the only mosaic with an explicitly Christian motif found in Portugal. Twelve graves with different dates were also found around the chapel. The Santuário de S. João de Frende on Rua do Castelo is dated to the Iron Age and was discovered during an archaeological excavation in 1973 led by Carlos Alberto Ferreira de Almeida. These various traces make Frende interesting for travellers who want to get to know not only individual structures but also the historical depth of a place.
Basket Weaving and Festival Traditions
Frende's cultural character also includes basket weaving with piorna. It is regarded as a traditional art originating in the Castreja culture. Knowledge of this weaving technique is passed down within families from older to younger women. This tradition gave rise to the ethnographic group “As Cesteiras de Frende”. A festival event or initiative founded in 2010 is intended to promote and honour the importance of Frende's baskets.
The festival calendar also provides a concrete reference point for planning a trip. The Festa da Padroeira, held in honour of Santa Maria de Frende, is celebrated annually on 7 October. The highlight is the procession in honour of the patron saint on the Sunday closest to 7 October. If you would like to plan your stay around this tradition, this date is an important point of reference. Those travelling independently of the festival date can instead focus on the archaeological topics, the craft tradition and the landscape.
Douro Landscape and Orientation in the Village
Frende lies on the right bank of the Douro. The area forms a promontory above the river; its outer section is elevated on a cone-shaped hill. Together with the strongly hilly terrain and fertile valleys, this creates a landscape that shapes the character of the village. A specific point of reference is the Frende Boundary Viewpoint on the EN 108 at kilometre 96.950.
The local character also includes the production of olive oil in the Freguesia Frende. Thus, in addition to its historical themes, the village offers an insight into the region's everyday and economic culture.
