At the same time, trails lead through the island’s natural surroundings to viewpoints, volcanic rock formations and protected habitats. Porto Santo also reveals different sides on the water. Windsurfing is favoured by calm seas, low waves and consistent wind conditions. Hiking Trails with Different Day-Trip Options

For active days, the hiking trails offer specific options. PS PR 1 – Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã is 2.7 kilometres long; the outward journey is scheduled to take 1 hour and 30 minutes, while the return route covers a further 2.7 kilometres. The trail runs through Rede Natura 2000 and includes several natural viewpoints towards the end at Terra Chã. PS PR 2 – Vereda do Pico do Castelo offers two variants: one is 3.2 kilometres long and is listed as taking 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk, while the other covers 4.6 kilometres and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. The trail provides contact with Porto Santo’s flora and fauna. This choice may be interesting for families with different interests, as an outing can be planned more according to the time available and the desired trail length. At Pico de Ana Ferreira, you can also see prismatic columns created by volcanic activity and the slow cooling of magma.

Island Nature and Special Viewpoints

Porto Santo has been part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since October 2020. The Reserva da Biosfera Porto Santo covers 27,310 hectares of protected zones and areas belonging to Rede Natura 2000. More than 2,110 species occur there, including some found exclusively on the island. For terrestrial habitats, more than 1,600 taxa with a high degree of endemism are cited; these include 15 flowering plant taxa found exclusively on Porto Santo.

The coast is also ecologically distinctive. The coastal ecology and the rocky Ilhéus of Porto Santo led to the creation of the Rede de Áreas Marinhas Protegidas do Porto Santo. In this protected area, a guided visit along an interpretation trail is one of the most important nature-tourism activities, followed by observing and listening for wildlife. The Miradouro da Fonte de Areia offers a different view of the landscape, overlooking Ilhéu da Fonte de Areia, the cliffs and the north coast. In a drier area of Porto Santo, Quinta das Palmeiras combines a miniature zoo with a botanical garden and covers more than 5,000 square metres with plant and animal species.

Culture, Cuisine and Choosing Your Accommodation

Capela do Espírito Santo is a still-active religious temple from the 17th century and houses Flemish paintings from the 16th century. The origins of Capela de Nossa Senhora da Graça date back to 1533; according to tradition, it served several times as a refuge for residents fleeing persecution by pirates. On 15 August, the Festas em honra de Nossa Senhora da Graça are celebrated there.

Local culinary specialities include Bolo do Caco and Capelas. Porto Santo’s Bolo do Caco is higher and larger than the Madeira version and contains no sweet potato. Capelas are sweet breads shaped like a chapel, particularly associated with the celebrations of São João and São Pedro.
