Porto Santo: Beach, Volcanic Landscapes and Island Culture

Porto Santo combines a nine-kilometre-long golden sandy beach with landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, protected habitats and a distinctive island culture. Praia do Porto Santo offers calm, crystal-clear water and is therefore a defining destination for relaxing days by the sea. At the same time, the island provides numerous opportunities to incorporate nature, history and local traditions into your trip. Protected Nature and Striking Volcanic Landscapes

Porto Santo has been part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since October 2020. The biosphere reserve covers 27,310 hectares of protected areas and Natura 2000 sites and is home to more than 2,110 species, including some that occur exclusively on the island. The network of protected marine areas includes the land areas of all the surrounding Ilhéus as well as marine areas around Ilhéu da Cal, also known as Ilhéu de Baixo, and Ilhéu de Cima.

An impressive natural landmark is the Pico de Ana Ferreira Natural Monument. It extends for around 1,100 metres and reaches a maximum height of 288 metres in the south of Porto Santo. Its prismatic columns were formed by volcanic activity and the slow cooling of magma. At the northern end there is an old quarry where almost perfect prismatic columns can be seen. The viewpoints also reveal the island’s volcanic character: from Miradouro da Ponta da Canavieira, you can look out over basalt rocks and coastal cliffs; Ilhéu do Ferro and Pico de Ana Ferreira are also visible from there.

Hiking Trails, Promenade and Views

For concrete day planning, the Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã offers a route of 2.7 kilometres each way; the outward journey is estimated to take 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Vereda do Pico do Castelo begins at Sítio do Moledo on the regional road. During the ascent around Pico do Facho, there is a northern and a southern route, measuring 3.2 and 4.6 kilometres respectively. Another perspective is offered by the Levada do Pico do Castelo, with a 530-metre-long tunnel and viewpoints over the coast of Porto Santo and Ilhéu de Baixo.

For more leisurely activities, the Promenade do Porto Santo runs for more than 300 metres along the sea beside the dune area and has benches. It can also be used by bicycle, on roller skates or on a skateboard. Miradouro da Portela offers a panoramic view over the southern coast, with Vila Baleira at the centre of the field of view; access is marked by a palm-lined avenue and a windmill. From Miradouro das Flores, you can see the entire nine-kilometre-long beach.

Island History, Architecture and Traditions

The historic fountains of Porto Santo were cultural meeting places where residents shared stories, songs and experiences from the island. Notable architecture includes Casa de Salão, a single-storey house with a roof covering made of the sandy clay or mortar material known as “salão”. In Vila Baleira, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and the Busto de Cristóvão Colombo are further notable reminders of the island’s history. The Padrão is located on Alameda do Infante near the old quay, where the promenade begins. Casa Colombo – Museu do Porto Santo provides informative content about Christopher Columbus and displays works relating to Portuguese and Spanish maritime expansion.

Religious buildings also provide historical points of reference during your trip. Capela do Espírito Santo dates back to the 17th century. Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade was commissioned between 1430 and 1446; Capela Morgada preserves part of the original 15th-century construction phase and Gothic elements from that period. Capela de Nossa Senhora da Graça dates back to 1533 in its origins. Its festival is celebrated on 15 August. The Espírito Santo religious festival takes place at the chapel in late July or early August and includes the traditional blessing of bread.

Active Days, Local Cuisine and Choosing Your Accommodation

Centro Hípico do Porto Santo offers riding lessons for beginners, horses suitable for children and hippotherapy. It also offers trail rides on routes with varying levels of difficulty for people of all ages and experience levels. Golf enthusiasts will find an 18-hole golf course on Porto Santo designed by Severiano Ballesteros. Quinta das Palmeiras lies west of the airport in one of the island’s most arid areas and includes a mini-zoo and a small botanical garden.

The culinary side includes Bolo do Caco, which differs from the version found on Madeira: it is thicker and larger and is made without sweet potato. Escarpiada is eaten year-round on Porto Santo and served with bonito, roasted horse mackerel, thistle salad and raw limpets.
