Anyone planning a trip with walks, longer routes and historical discoveries will find various ways here to get to know the town and its surroundings. Protected Landscape and Paths Around Turcifal

A defining destination is the Paisagem Protegida Local das Serras do Socorro e Archeira. The protected landscape covers approximately 1,192 hectares and extends predominantly across the parishes of Turcifal and União das Freguesias de Dois Portos e Runa. The Centro Interpretativo da Paisagem Protegida Local das Serras do Socorro e Archeira is dedicated to environmental education and supports the management of the protected area. It also promotes educational, scientific and cultural activities relating to the natural and cultural heritage of the landscape.

The Eco-Caminho connects Turcifal with the summit area of Serra do Socorro and is approximately 5.7 kilometres long. Along the way, it passes Quinta do Manjapão, Capela da Cadriceira and the spring of Serra do Socorro. There are also three birdwatching sites along the Eco-Caminho. These individual stops give the route different thematic highlights without requiring you to commit to just one way of exploring.

Different Routes for Planning Your Day

The Rota dos Encantos is on a different scale: the route is 22 kilometres long and begins near the Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena in Turcifal. It is not signposted on site. Planning therefore requires a map, a leaflet or GPS navigation. The Free Trail Socorro e Archeira, on the other hand, begins and ends at the interpretation centre of the protected landscape in Cadriceira. It is signposted as a running route and follows prominent paths through the Paisagem Protegida Local das Serras do Socorro e Archeira.

Anyone planning to follow the Rota dos Encantos should include the necessary navigation in their preparations from the outset. Those who prefer to follow a signposted route can consider the Free Trail as a separate option.

Churches, Chapels and an Iron Age Settlement

The Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria Madalena was begun in the 18th century and took approximately a century to complete. The remodelling that gave the church its present structure is attributed to João Antunes, the royal architect of D. Pedro II. The origins of the church may date back to the Middle Ages; its existence is documented for the year 1353.

At the summit of Serra do Socorro are the Povoado da Serra do Socorro and the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Socorro. From there, there are excellent views across the surrounding region. The Povoado is an Iron Age fortified settlement with an oval layout measuring approximately 300 by 100 metres. Both the Povoado and the chapel are classified as IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público. Every year on 5 August, the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Socorro is associated with a solemn Mass, a procession and a popular festival.

The Capela do Espírito Santo also forms part of Turcifal’s historical dimension. It is believed to have been founded in the late 15th or early 16th century. Thus, a journey through Turcifal brings together paths through the protected landscape, viewpoints, religious sites and evidence from different periods.
