Torres Vedras combines the Atlantic coast, a rich history and a variety of paths and routes. Another notable structure is the Gothic aqueduct of Torres Vedras, which extends for more than two kilometres and supplied the Chafariz dos Canos in the historic city centre.

Several institutions make the history of the area accessible from different perspectives. The Museu Municipal Leonel Trindade houses collections ranging from archaeology and sacred art to palaeontology and contemporary painting. The Centro de Interpretação da Comunidade Judaica presents the history of the Jewish presence in Torres Vedras. At the Centro de Interpretação das Linhas de Torres Vedras, you can learn more about the history and significance of the defensive lines built during the third French invasion of Portugal.

The Carnaval de Torres Vedras dates back to the 16th century and is known for its satirical spirit, floats, masked groups, Matrafonas and carnival king and queen. The Centro de Artes e Criatividade presents its history and characteristics through specially developed historical and educational content. A local speciality is the Pastel de Feijão de Torres Vedras: a small, individually baked sweet pastry made with white bean, almond, egg yolk, sugar and water.

Hiking trails between vineyards, forests and the coast

Torres Vedras has 13 short-distance trails as well as sections of the Rota do Atlântico (GR 11) and the Rota das Linhas de Torres (GR 30). The municipal trails can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. This gives you different ways to plan your days without having to commit to a single type of landscape.

The PR 1 – Rota do Vinho e da Vinha passes through areas with rustic buildings and houses, woodland and gardens. The PR 7 – Rota das Quintas starts and ends in Carmões and runs through predominantly rural areas with numerous vineyards. The PR 6 – Rota da Luz is located in an area shaped by the importance of winegrowing and green, vine-covered slopes. The Rota do Enoturismo de Torres Vedras can also be used to explore the area's winegrowing tradition.

Several specific options are available for longer or themed tours. The PR 3 – Rota das Lapas is a 16 km circular route starting from Matacães; its main attraction is Quinta das Lapas. The PR 4 – Rota do Castro do Zambujal is 13 km long and has a branch leading to the archaeological site of Castro do Zambujal. This fortified Copper Age settlement is one of the largest and best-preserved Chalcolithic settlements on the Iberian Peninsula. The PR 5 – Rota do Vento is 14 km long and has a branch of around 8 km. It starts in the central garden opposite the Igreja Matriz de São Lucas in Freiria.

Those looking for scenic landscapes can choose the PR 8 – Rota dos Moinhos, with its forests and cultivated fields. From higher ground, there are views of the Serra de Montejunto and, in clear weather, the sea. The PR 9 – Rota dos Encantos runs through the protected local landscape of the Serras do Socorro e Archeira. There are two birdwatching sites on the Serra do Socorro and another near Quinta do Manjapão. The section of the Grande Rota das Linhas de Torres in the municipality of Torres Vedras is 112 km long and consists of two circular sections through the defensive system.

Atlantic coast and days by the water

Torres Vedras has a 20 km-long Atlantic coastline with sandy beaches and small sheltered beaches between the rocks. The PR 2 – Rota do Atlântico runs linearly through urban areas and along beaches. The PR 13 – Rota da Reserva Foz Azul is an 8 km-long linear trail connecting Assenta with Praia da Foz do Sizandro and running close to the cliffs. The section of the Grande Rota Caminho do Atlântico also follows the entire coastline of the municipality of Torres Vedras and forms part of the European long-distance route E9.

A special coastal spot is Praia da Formosa, with its small natural swimming pools. Praia de Santa Rita has a wide sandy beach bordered by hills and vegetation-covered dunes. It has strong surf, making it suitable for surfing and bodyboarding. On the coastal cliffs of Santa Cruz, Upper Jurassic rock strata of scientific interest can be seen. A cycle path connects Santa Cruz with Porto Novo, while the Ecopista do Sizandro leads from Foz do Sizandro to Torres Vedras.
