It is also considered an exceptional example of Italian Baroque and is one of the most significant buildings commissioned by King João V. The Basilica of the Palácio Nacional de Mafra houses a unique ensemble of six pipe organs. The instruments were designed to be played together and were built between 1792 and 1807 by the Portuguese organ builders António Machado e Cerveira and Joaquim Peres Fontanes. The library of the Palácio Nacional de Mafra is also remarkable: its carefully selected collection comprises around 30,000 volumes and is regarded as an expression of Enlightenment knowledge and court culture in the first half of the 18th century.

The Museu Nacional da Música offers another perspective on music. Around 500 pieces are on display; the storage facilities contain more than 1,000 musical instruments as well as instrument-making tools, audio equipment, accessories, sheet music, sound recordings, visual representations and various documents. The collection includes instruments from the 12th to the 21st century that represent different musical practices and contexts. Some pieces are classified as national treasures. In addition, the Igreja de Santo André is one of the most significant examples of Gothic parish architecture.

Gardens, Wilderness and Active Days

Jardim do Cerco provides a contrast to the monumental architecture. The eight-hectare Baroque garden includes ponds, broad paths, shade-providing trees and cascades. A still-functioning century-old water wheel system is also part of its facilities. Admission is free. From October to March, the garden is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; from April to September, it is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This makes it possible to include the garden as a standalone activity in a cultural or relaxing day.

Tapada Nacional de Mafra covers more than 800 hectares. This diverse natural habitat is home to various species of deer, wild boar, foxes and birds of prey, among others. Active excursions include hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. The range of activities also includes archery and crossbow shooting. The nearby Aldeia Típica José Franco recreates former workshops and shops and conveys the customs and working practices of rural life in the Mafra region. A playful miniature area depicts, among other things, fields, carpentry workshops, windmills, chapels, grocery shops, schools, wine cellars and Ericeira’s fishing traditions.
