Reguengo Grande: Mills, Building History and Local Flavours
Accommodation in Reguengo Grande
Reguengo Grande can be explored through a range of interests: the PR2 – Pelo Planalto das Cesaredas leads to old watermills in Vale de Cornagas, while the village’s windmills stand above the valley. Igreja de São Domingos offers specific details about its building history, including a sundial dating from 1781. And then there are the sweet Reguengos. This offers different focal points for planning your holiday: walking the trail, culture and architecture, or a local speciality.
Mills in the valley and above it
The PR2 – Pelo Planalto das Cesaredas hiking trail passes through Vale de Cornagas and leads to its old watermills. The windmills of Reguengo Grande are located above the valley. This brings two distinct types of mills and landscapes into view: the watermills along the trail in the valley and the windmills above it. If you are interested in historic utility buildings, the route provides a direct connection to the old watermills; the windmills add another aspect to the subject of mills, above the valley.
Architecture and history at Igreja de São Domingos
Igreja de São Domingos is a church of religious architecture dating from the 17th century. It has an elongated floor plan, with a nave and a shallow chancel. The nave forms the church’s central longitudinal space, with the chancel adjoining it. Outside, a square bell tower stands north of the main façade. On the south side is a vertical stone sundial with Roman numerals and an iron gnomon, dating from 1781. The gnomon is the sundial’s shadow-casting pointer.
The municipality also lists Azenhas do Vale Cornága and Igreja de S. Domingos in its register of architectural heritage. Thus, alongside the church’s architecture, other named places are part of the picture of Reguengo Grande’s architectural heritage.
Museum and sweet Reguengos
The “Lourinhã Interior” route includes a visit to Museu Rural do Reguengo Grande. If you would like to include the museum in your plans, check visiting arrangements in advance. This lets you plan the museum visit as a cultural focus in its own right, alongside the trail and church architecture.
Reguengos are pastries made with the distinctive Reguengueira variety of Reinette apple. These apples are less tart and sweeter than ordinary apples—a clear difference in flavour that also characterises the pastries. Reguengos are sold at Pastelaria Natinhas do Céu in Reguengo Grande. If you are looking for a local speciality as you explore the area, the bakery offers a specific culinary point of interest.
Planning your stay
The Urbanização da Junta de Freguesia do Reguengo Grande includes craft shops, a picnic area and a playground. For families, the playground is a practical planning consideration; the crafts and picnic area appeal to other interests. Check locally which of the listed facilities are currently open.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider what kind of daily itinerary you prefer: a stay focused on the PR2 is different from one that gives more attention to building history, the museum and Reguengos.
