Discover Ferrel: Beaches, Baleal and Portuguese Traditions
Ferrel combines a striking coastal landscape with religious traditions, historical traces and various opportunities for active days. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Ferrel, you can plan your trip around different priorities: extensive sandy beaches and lively seas, culture and festivals, or excursions to the Baleal peninsula. You can also organise your journey without your own car.
Beaches, Baleal and Landscape
Praia do Baleal Norte, also known as Praia do Lagido, has an extensive sandy beach, lively seas and Blue Flag status. Praia da Almagreira between rocks and cliffs has a different character. There, wild vegetation and golden sandy beaches shape the landscape. Praia do Pico da Mota also offers an extensive beach; above the cliffs are fields used for agriculture, and there is also a small watercourse that carries water only at certain times.
On the southern peninsula of Baleal lies Praia das Cebolas, a small beach between rock formations with a view of the Ilha das Cebolas rock formation. For a quieter change from days at the beach, the Pinhal de Ferrel on the eastern edge of the village is an option. The extensive pine forest has a picnic area. Those interested in water sports can find hardboards, softboards and bicycles for rent to guests and external visitors at Ferrel Surf House in Baleal.
Culture, Festivals and Historical Traces
The Capela de Ferrel, also known as Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia, is classified as an imóvel de interesse público (IIP), meaning a property of public interest. Its Mannerist architecture dates from the late 17th century and features later alterations, a single-nave interior and gilded altar furnishings. The protected ensemble also includes the churchyard, a cross standing in front of it and a garden at the rear.
Ferrel’s most important village festival is the Festa em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Guia; the first records date back to the 17th century. The Festa em Honra de Santa Quitéria is a religious and traditional festival that normally takes place on the last weekend of October. The Festa em Honra de Santo Estêvão is normally celebrated in November, as close as possible to 11 November. These dates may play a role in annual planning if you would like to organise your stay around local traditions.
On the Baleal peninsula, the small Ermida de Santo Estêvão stands on a rock formation. The religious building may date from the 16th or 17th century. The area’s older history is also tangible: archaeological investigations uncovered traces of shell middens associated with the Fortim do Baleal. They may confirm a prehistoric, possibly Neolithic date and use connected with the exploitation of aquatic resources. Another historical reference is the popular demonstration of 15 March 1976 against the construction of a nuclear power plant north of the village, which became associated with the slogan “Ferrel, the capital of the struggle against nuclear power”.
Getting There and Choosing Your Base
From Lisbon, Ferrel can be reached by bus, among other options, with Rede Nacional de Expressos or Rodoviária do Tejo. Another option is to take the Linha do Oeste to Caldas da Rainha and then continue by bus to Peniche, with a route via Baleal and Ferrel. Road access is via the westbound A8 and the IP6. Taxis are particularly useful at night for occasional journeys between Peniche, Baleal and Ferrel.
When looking for accommodation, you can therefore first decide which travel idea is your priority: beaches and Baleal, cultural discoveries in Ferrel, or a combination of coast, nature and festival traditions. This makes choosing a holiday apartment part of a concrete holiday plan, without requiring you to limit yourself to just one type of Ferrel experience.
