Caldas Da Rainha combines a long thermal history with museums dedicated to art and ceramics, Parque D. Carlos I and Praça da Fruta, whose history dates back to the 15th century. This gives a trip several concrete points of interest: institutional history, collections, a garden and market traditions. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your days away.

Thermal History and a National Monument

Hospital Termal das Caldas da Rainha was founded in 1485 by Queen D. Leonor. It is the oldest thermal hospital in the world still in operation. Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo has been a national monument since 1910. Together, the two sites represent different historical themes: the founding and long history of the hospital, and the church’s recognised status as a monument. They give the city’s history a tangible framework, without a museum visit being the only way to engage with it.

Art, Ceramics and Museum History

Museu do Hospital e das Caldas is housed in the former Casa Real and traces the founding and development of Caldas da Rainha. Museu José Malhoa has a different focus: its building was the first in Portugal designed for museum use. The collections include painting, sculpture and ceramics from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum also has a sculpture exhibition in Parque D. Carlos I. Museum history, collections and an exhibition in the park thus offer different ways to experience art.

Museu da Cerâmica offers a dedicated perspective on ceramics: its collections cover Portuguese and foreign ceramics centres from the 16th century to the present day, with local production predominating. The museum is temporarily closed for renovation work. Before planning a visit, check whether it is still closed. This is particularly important if ceramics are to be a focus of your trip; the other museums and cultural sites offer different perspectives.

Parque D. Carlos I

Parque D. Carlos I is a romantic garden adjoining Hospital Termal Rainha D. Leonor. Its features include century-old trees and recreational facilities, as well as a lake with boats, a bandstand, a picnic area and a tennis court. The park complements the focus on museums and monuments with garden and outdoor themes. If you plan a visit, check access separately in case of weather-related closures. Park facilities may also be affected by temporary closures or maintenance work.

Crafts, Markets and Culture

Praça da Fruta has been around since the 15th century, adding a long market tradition to the townscape. Caldas Da Rainha’s cultural identity also includes its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, which the city received in 2019. Those interested in craft traditions will find a relevant connection here to the ceramics collections and the museums’ art offerings, while recognising that these are distinct areas.

Centro de Artes brings together the four museums António Duarte, João Fragoso, Barata Feyo and Leopoldo de Almeida, as well as Espaço da Concas and Casa Amarela. Exhibitions, workshops and events take place there. It broadens the cultural offering with a range of formats: alongside collections and museum spaces, there are also workshops and events. This offers another way to make art and culture a focus of your trip.

Which themes suit your trip?

The offerings differ considerably in both subject and format: Museu José Malhoa combines a distinctive museum history with painting, sculpture and ceramics; Museu do Hospital e das Caldas explores the city’s development; and Parque D. Carlos I complements these perspectives with a garden, lake and recreational facilities. Museu da Cerâmica has its own ceramics focus, but is temporarily closed. For families, it may be helpful to consider everyone’s interests when planning each day, rather than assuming a single theme will suit the entire stay.
